Both scenic waterfalls are located just off Highway 47 the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway about 15 miles north of the city of Ashton in southeastern Idaho not too far from Yellowstone National Park. Upper Mesa Falls

Upper Mesa Falls drops 114 spectacular feet over a 300 foot wide cliff face along Henrys Fork. Upper Mesa is a powerful and highly impressive waterfall. Caribou-Targhee National Forest has built viewpoints connected with walkways at Upper Mesa Falls from the parking lot which makes viewing the falls safe and easy.

On sunny days from about 9 am until 1 pm the mist from powerful Upper Mesa Falls creates a beautiful rainbow that stretches out from the waterfall below towards the top of the canyon. Fishing is allowed at the falls and there is a trail which takes hikers down to Lower Mesa Falls.

Lower Mesa Falls

Lower Mesa Falls is located downstream from Upper Mesa Falls. So visitors driving north from Ashton will reach the turn-off for Lower Mesa Falls first. Lower Mesa Falls is not as spectacular as Upper Mesa Falls but is still a beautiful waterfall in its own right worth seeing.

Lower Mesa Falls drops 65 to 70 feet along Henrys Fork and has more overall power than the upper falls because the same water volume flows here but in a more compact manner. The lower falls are not as wide as the upper. The rock both falls flows over was created well over 1 million years ago and been shaped by the flow of the river since.
