Timelines of the British Monarchy 1066 - 2010.
Since the year 1066 when Edward the Conqueror came to the throne as the first Norman monarch, Britain has seen 41 monarchs - 6 queens and 35 kings - from nine royal houses or dynasties.
Barring six that died of the natural causes of old age, there has also been one monarch die an accidental death and one abdicated, two monarchs were killed in battle and two were murdered, three were executed and three were deposed, with all the others dying from some form of medical condition not attributed to old age.
The longest reigning royal dynasty was that of the Plantagenets and the shortest dynasty was that of the Royal House of Saxe Coburg, although the house does in fact still exist, but it's title was changed from it's original German name to that of the more English sounding, House of Windsor, due to the two countries war history.
The longest reigning monarch was Queen Victoria, who reigned for over 63 years and the shortest reigning monarch was Queen Jane, who reigned for only nine days.
The longest reigning king was George III, who reigned for over 60 years and the shortest reigning King was Edward V, who was murdered after only three months on the throne.
The youngest monarch to take the throne was Henry VI at the age of only nine months and the oldest monarch to take the crown was Edward VII at the age of 59.
