Makahiku Falls is a beautiful 180 foot high waterfall located along the stream running through Ohe'o Gulch in Haleakala National Park along the southeast coast of Maui, Hawaii. Ohe'o Gulch is located in the Kipahulu District and is famous for the terraced Pools of Ohe'o known as the Seven Sacred Pools.

The Seven Sacred Pools are located right along the famous Hana Highway which is also Highway 31. Makahiku Falls is located a little ways upstream from the Pools. To reach the lookout for Makahiku Falls from the parking lot on the Hana Highway/Route 31 take the Pipiwai Trail which takes hikers up the gulch for 1/2 mile to the waterfall lookout.

The lookout offers visitors fantastic views of Makahiku Falls though the bottom part of the falls is obscured by vegetation. At waterfalls in the continental United States that are obscured by vegetation in the summer visitors can simply travel to the waterfalls in the winter when the vegetation is gone. But of course Hawaii has a tropical climate and the vegetation lasts all year.

Visitors who want to see the top of Makahiku Falls can hike to the crest along a spur trail located past the lookout. Caution must be exercised here though as people have fallen to their deaths at this site. Also the area is prone to flash floods which can also kill. Check local forecasts at the visitor center located at the parking lot along the Hana Highway.

Makahiku Falls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls on Maui and in Hawaii. It is also a very popular tourist attraction along the Hana Highway in Haleakala National Park. Most people who visit the Seven Sacred Pools in Ohe'o Gulch also make the short hike up to the Makahiku Falls Lookout and none are disappointed with the fabulous views.
