Akaka Falls is an incredibly beautiful waterfall located in Akaka Falls State Park on the Big Island of Hawaii. Akaka Falls is a popular tourist attraction in Hawaii that is formed as Kolekole Stream drops 442 amazing feet over cliff face surrounded by lush greenery so common in this part of Hawaii.

Akaka Falls State Park is located a little over 10 miles north of the city of Hilo in the Waipio Valley on the Big Island. Hilo is the rainiest and wettest weather city in the United States as it receives 128 inches of average annual rain per year. What that means is that the area around Hilo is very lush and green. It also means that Akaka Falls will always be flowing and almost always with heavy flow.

The abundant rain in the area also provides many opportunities to see rainbows around Akaka Falls. As anyone who has been to Hawaii for any length of time knows rainbows are a frequent occurrence in many parts of the Hawaiian Islands and those rainbows are even more spectacular around waterfalls.

To get to Akaka Falls from Hilo take the Hawaiian Belt Road also known as Route 19 and the Mamalahoa Highway north for about 7 miles to the town of Pepeekeo. Just north of Pepeekeo turn left onto Sugar Mill Road/Andrade Camp Road and follow until it ends at Highway 22. Turn left onto Highway 22 and Akaka Falls State Park is just ahead on the right. Follow the marked loop trail for a short hike to fabulous viewpoints for Akaka Falls.
