Clothing for Dogs - Fashion or Necessity?

Many find the concept of clothing on dogs ridiculous and frivolous. However, when considered from the utilitarian standpoint there is nor real cause for laughter or eye rolls. Dog coats, sweaters, raingear and even dog booties are useful and often necessary.

In the Northern States and in Canada, short haired breeds suffer considerably during the winter months. A fine example of this is the Native American breed, the Boston terrier. This dog has a comparatively thin skin and short fine coat, which provides poor protection to the winter winds and low temperatures. Without some sort of protection, the Boston terrier and dogs like them will suffer during the cold weather.

The best protection for short haired dogs is a well -fitting, closely knit sweater or one of the winter coats now made for dogs. If a lighter garment is needed, a coat of cloth is recommended. The coat should be cut in such a manner that the chest is fully covered. It should be long enough to reach the root of the tail and deep in girth to cover the ribs. A coat is usually held in place by a strap similar to a surcingle for a horse.

A raincoat for a dog is useful, especially for long haired toy breeds. It should be fitted the same way as the winter coat. When a dog returns from a walk in the rain, the coat should be hung up to dry. A raincoat saves the dog from the effects of a thorough wetting and goes a long way towards saving clothing, carpets and furniture for the owner.

Dog booties are another clothing item that receives many a snicker. However, those who have had their dogs suffer from cut, burnt or frozen feet, well understand the need for them. Dog Booties are not just helpful during the winter months but also during the summer. Thorns, bramble, sharp rocks and burning hot sand and pavement can hurt a dog’s feet during the summer. While during the winter, dogs can be cut by sharp ice and get ice and snow build up between their toes, making it painful for them to walk. The salt that is put on sidewalks and drives can also be a real problem for many dogs. Dog booties help to keep a dog’s feet free of cuts and burns.

Many dog owners dress their dogs up in a variety of doggie wear simply because they enjoy it. However, many dog owners are not doing it for fashion nor appearance but for the safety of their dog. It is a responsible dog owner who cares for their dog properly and protects them against the elements.
