Several factors to consider before choosing your grass!
There are a number of factors to consider revising before choosing your grass. This includes:
· Maintenance
· Environmentally friendly
· Risk from disease and pests
· Weed invasion
What will your lawn look like?
Some grasses blend together quite nicely and could allow you to do less work while others may even destroy another in terms of growing size.
How much money are you spending?
If you are serious about a healthy lawn, the best option to choose is to spend a lot of money on your lawn as the cost will be high and more time will have to be sacrificed.
How much sunshine does your site receive?
Some grasses plenty more sunshine than others. So you need to pick which ones go well with your site. Does your yard receive enough sunshine throughout the year or are they covered with shade throughout.
What is the purpose of your lawn?
You need to determine what your lawn will be used for. It is important to carefully consider what brands you will need.
Mowing difficulties!
For some gardeners, it can be a little hard to mow in certain areas. This is where groundcovers which don’t require any mowing and trimming could help you out with less maintenance. Groundcovers such as English Ivy and Liriope can make a good landscape for hard mowing areas.
Sunshine or shade
Most grasses tend to grow much better in areas that receive more than six hours a day of sunshine. You need to explore the different grasses so you know what will work for your lawn. If however, your lawn receives less than six hours a day of sunshine, any grasses you choose which need that important sunshine will do very poor. So you should try the variety of grasses that can tolerate sufficient hours of shade.
Wearability
This factor goes to the purpose of your lawn. If it is to be used as a play area, then you need to select a variety that has a good wearing tolerance or else your lawn is going to wear away quite quickly.
Drought
Some grasses can tolerate very dry conditions with very little water. Most grasses need at least 2cm of water each week. If your location is of a very hot climate with little rain, your choice should be one of these varieties.
What type of grass can I choose?
Sowing your lawn with seeds is an option you could take if you want to save money. On the other hand, Turf is another good option but is not widely available for a gardener. If you want something less cheap than Turf, you can try Runners which results in a faster lawn than seeds. The only downturn for this is that they are not always available.
Warm and cool season grasses!
For a healthy lawn, you need to choose the right grass through your living conditions. You may think as though there is only one type of grass on this planet, but there is actually a variety of them. After coming across the other varieties, you will quickly learn that each grass type lives with a different climate.
Your living conditions are the key factor of choosing a grass type. Below, you will come across cool and warm season grasses and it’s your choice to choose which particular one matches your country. Remember that warm season grasses can survive in excessive summer heat and droughts which suits tropical regions. Cool season grasses can survive in colder climates and may also tolerate droughts. Warm season grasses are planted as a single seed instead of a mixture. It could be a better choice to grow a singular grass type alone as their growth rate is very quick and strong and it will outdo other weeds and grasses. Let’s learn both warm and cool season grasses below.
Cool season grasses include:
1) Kentucky Bluegrass
This type of grass is a deep blue and green coloured with narrow leaf blades. It does pretty well in both sunshine and shade. However, one downside is that you will have to water more frequently than other grasses.
2) Tall Fescue
The colour of this type of grass is a slightly lighter green than the Kentucky Bluegrass. The Tall Fescue is suitable for blending with the Kentucky Bluegrass to make it more adaptable. One positive fact about this grass is that it can tolerate long periods of drought and moderate amounts of shade and adapt to different soils. It grows well in areas where the climates can get too cold or too hot.
3) Perennial Ryegrass
The Perennial Ryegrass requires more watering during the summer than other grasses. But the dark green leaves grow very quickly.
4) Fine Fescues
A medium green coloured grass with narrow leaf blades, giving a fine texture to the lawn. Fine Fescues are the best in tolerating plenty of shade and drought and they don’t need much watering.
Warm season grasses include:
1) Couch
Plenty of maintenance is required for this one. Full sunshine and lots of water is necessary. The grass may also get damaged by insects and during the winter months, the Couch will turn brown. This may not a good option for your lawn.
2) Buffalo
This needs less watering than the Couch but a weekly routine wouldn’t do harm and it can also tolerate some shade. The Buffalo can also survive in heavy traffic areas and has light green leaves.
3) Zoysia
This dark green coloured grass requires full sunshine and can wear very well. Many weeds are prone to getting destroyed and out beaten by this but will be a difficult one to mow.
Conclusion
The basic and beginning fact about having a lawn is to choose your grass carefully after revising the needs and conditions of these grasses or you will not be successful.
