Benefits of Swimming

Swimming is one of many sports that can help the whole body in some way or the other. It tones the body and provides an excellent exercise workout. If you’re a person who spends hours doing exercise, you should include swimming as a part of your exercise regime for astonishing results. A normal exercise workout such as weight lifting causes muscle pain and can cause tissue damage. Swimming can do as much as normal exercise could do with no damage to muscles or tissues. Research has shown that swimming has many benefits to our physical, mental and social wellbeing. The health benefits of swimming include the entire body except the bones. But despite this exception, swimming can improve and heal body muscles including the heart and its blood circulation throughout the body, stronger heart, improved posture, flexibility, endurance and general muscular strength.

1) Obese and Lower Back Pain

Swimming has benefits for those who are obese or suffering from lower back pain. However, don’t rely on swimming as a great way to lose weight. The reason swimming is not the best way to lose weight is because of the cooling effects of water. Exercise on land increases body temperature and uses up the same amount of calories than you would lose in the pool every hour. But after you’re swimming session ends, your body stops burning most of the calories whereas after you finish a workout on land, the body continues burning calories. This is because your body works hard to cool itself down while the pool water helps cool your body down automatically.

2) Running and Pregnancy

Swimming is another similar exercise to running. It helps increase heart rate and blood circulation just like running would do. However, running can put strain on your leg muscles and cause tiredness. On the other hand, swimming can improve high blood pressure, joint stiffness and reduce discomfort. These are problems that are faced by women who are pregnant which means that swimming can benefit both runners and pregnant women.

3) Mental Benefits

Swimming can be an alternative method for meditation. Using swimming to refresh and clear your mind of daily stress can improve depression and other problems.
