EducationHow to Get Rid of Fruit Flies
Fruit flies can distract you a lot. You may be thirsty for a watery melon when suddenly a stampede of baby fruit flies arrive who want it for themselves. Fruit flies can be very annoying when you’re trying to eat or keep fresh fruit from the groceries into your kitchen. Below are a few ways you can get rid of them. Let’s read!
1) Use a jar!
You can use a jar to catch fruit flies. Just fill in a jar with some of their favourite foods like vinegar and overripe fruit. Insert some paper into the mouth of the jar. Once this is done, the flies will fly through the funnel to get their fruit but they will not be able to come out. This way will easily get rid of many of these flies. Another option could be worthwhile is to hang sticky strips from the ceiling with a fruitful scent attached. This will also help trap fruit flies onto them.
2) Remove their breeding grounds!
It is likely that fruit flies may lay eggs on the plates and other dirty surfaces. Remove any rotten fruit and vegetables that are getting bad and smelly and wash all the dishes until they are not out of your house. Examine the rest of the house and remove any food material you notice. These fruit flies travel around the home, they may have planted more eggs in places you may not have thought. Sweep, Hoover and mop all the rooms of your household.
Do remember that fruit flies try finding alternatives. They may find plant pots and flowers for more breeding as they are comfy. Clean the surfaces of your fridge and oven and anything near your fruit bowls.
3) Storing your foods!
After cleaning the household, the next step is to prevent them from destroying your food. Buy some food containers and canisters for food products like pastas, cereals, flour and anything else that fruit flies love! Never leave this food products lying around your kitchen, it will eventually be taken over by these fruit flies because of the smell.
4) Smelly dustbins!
Now that you have done several acts to keep these fruit flies away, it would be a waste of time if they can get into your household again. This is likely to occur if you have a dirty, smelly dustbin which is not far off from your home. Fruit flies can easily enter your home time and time again followed by blue beetle flies and more! It is far safer and hygienic to keep the dustbin as far as possible. Try keeping your dustbin clean without the horrendous smells. Whenever you throw rotten food and any other waste away, always tighten the dustbin bag to reduce the stink from continuously leaking.
3) Wait and see if you see results!
Now that your job is done, you should not immediately celebrate. Through normal temperatures, it may take one or two weeks for eggs to hatch and mature. Until then, do keep a look out around your home and make sure no more of these fruit flies exist.
4) Anything that keeps them away!
You can use deodorant sprays to keep flies away. These sprays are very useful and are against flies. It seems obvious that flies cannot tolerate anything that smells so beautiful. These include:
- · Lavender oil
- · Citronella oil
- · Eucalyptus oil
- · Pennyroyal oil
- · Peppermint oil
5) Freeze them!
Use any type of jar or plastic container for this trap. Place a rotten fruit of any kind inside the container and make a small hole for the fruit flies to go through. After you have collected enough fruit flies, tape the small hole so they cannot get out and place the container into the freezer for 10-15 minutes. This will kill them all and you can repeat the process until your house is fully empty.
6) Hair dryer!
Use your hair dryer to suck the fruit flies inside. They will get roasted and it should be fun. Try it now!
7) Vacuum!
Collect most of the fruit flies into the funnel area. Suck them in with the vacuum, even if they fly through the air.
8) Hairspray!
Hairspray would do well on killing them very quickly. Just one spray and they should curl up and die. Make sure you spray it very close to them for quicker effects.
