Nuclear power is discussed more commonly in today’s world as it seems to be on many people’s minds for many reasons. Nuclear power has its advantages for the world such as releasing less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, already available without the need to develop and the possibility to produce enough electricity from one plant. However, the disadvantages of nuclear power are mostly ignored. This article contains some good reasons why nuclear power should be not be used due to safety reasons.

1) Disadvantages of Nuclear Power: Radioactive Waste

One disadvantage of nuclear power is that it can be very dangerous to look after. Maintaining the safety of radioactive waste can be a challenge. The waste from nuclear energy is very dangerous and needs to be carefully looked after for thousands of years. The nuclear waste has to be disposed off in a secure nuclear waste disposal facility. However, a location for this type of waste is hard to find and has been a problem for many years. Due to the risk of nuclear waste posed on the environment, the nuclear waste is transferred to storage facilities deep underground to prevent any radiation and damage to the environment. This seems to be the best option for safety but if it were placed anywhere else on land or the ocean, the effects would be devastating.

Certain countries such as France, Britain and Japan reprocess nuclear waste to produce new fuel. France seems to be the top country to reprocess nuclear fuel by generating 80% of its electricity from 59 reactors. France had begun their recycling program in the 1970s and have continuously been doing so for decades.

2) Disadvantages of Nuclear Power: Terrorists

Looking at the current state of terrorism, it seems to be a worrying concern to the public if terrorists were to use nuclear weaponry for their gain. This worry doesn’t seem to be fictional and would be a serious issue if terrorists were to reach their hands on these dangerous weapons. Imagining such an incident is scary enough but if it were to happen, the whole world would be affected by such an explosion. Of course no one can forget the nuclear bomb on Hiroshima in 1945 causing widespread devastation and instantly killing several thousands of people.

Summary

Although nuclear power has some advantages, the disadvantages outweigh the benefits. Nuclear power releases less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere but the lifespan of nuclear power is sure to end in the near future which is in itself a disadvantage.
