Varieties of Apples: "H" to "Hi"

Many people are only aware of the two or three kinds of apples that their grocery store sells, however, there are more than 4,700 varieties available. This article details the apples that begin with "H" through to "Hi."

Haas

The Haas apple came from 1872 Missouri and harvests in September. It is greenish-yellow with red stripes. The white flesh can sometimes be stained with red.

Hampshire

The Hampshire was a chance seedling in a Red Delicious and comes from 1990 New Hampshire. It is large and has a red blush with a bit of striping. A tough skin, it does not discolor easily. Keeps for a long time.

Haralred

The Haralred apple is from La Crescent, Minnesota and harvests in September. It is a good keeper and is very red and very sweet.

Haralson

The Haralson apple is a cross between the Malinda and Wealthy, which was confirmed through DNA testing. It is in season from October to February. An excellent baking, eating, and cider apple, it is a bit tart.

Hauxapfel

The Hauxapfel apple comes from 1920 Germany and is in season from November to March. It is known for being a cider apple, but is also good for cooking and baking. Medium to large in size, red stripes over a green skin.

Hawaii

The Hawaii apple is a cross between the Golden Delicious and Gravenstein and was introduced in 1945. It tastes and smells like pineapple and is large, yellow with a light pink-orange stripe.

Hawkeye Delicious

The Hawkeye Delicious is the original Delicious apple. Although people try, they cannot improve on the eating quality of this original, genuine Delicious.

Hawley

The Hawley apple is also known as the Douse or Dowse and harvests in September. It is large and has a smooth, yet waxy skin. It is greenish yellow with a brown blush. Plenty of russet dots all over.

Hayne's Seedling

Hayne's Seedling harvests in early October and is green to yellow and keeps quite well.

Hazen

The Hazen apple is a cross between the Duchess Oldenburg and Starking Delicious. Created by North Dakota University and introduced in 1980. This apple harvests from August to September and is large, round, and dark red.

Henry Clay

The Henry Clay apple harvests in mid August and is yellow and red in color. Looks like the Yellow Transparent apple. It is medium in size, and is flat.

Herrings Pippin

The Herrings Pippin comes from 1908 England and harvests in September. Large, deep green with crimson on only one side.

Heyer 12

Heyer 12 is green to yellow and medium in size. Soft and tart.

Heyer 20

Heyer 20 is from Saskatchewan, Canada and harvests in late August. Medium in size, it is yellow-green and has a juicy, sweet flavor.
