Varieties of Apples: "Goo" to "Gz"

If you believe the saying, "An apple a day will keep the doctor away," then you will never be bored with all these apples. There are a total of 4,700 different kinds of apples and new varieties are being made every day. This list describes the ones that begin with "Goo" through "Gz."

Goodland

The Goodland apple comes from 1940's Manitoba, Canada. It is in season in September. It is round, red and yellow.

Goof

The Goof apple harvests in early October. It is pale green with a deep purple-red and yellow streaks. It is not as goofy as the name implies. A very good apple, actually.

Granny Smith

The Granny Smith is a well-known apple and comes from 1850 Australia. It is in season from October to December and is green in color. Tastes tart and keeps very well.

Gravenstein

The Gravenstein apple comes from 1600's Italy and it finally made its way to the United States in 1790. Harvested during August or September, it is large and is orange-yellow with red strips. It has a very thin skin and is used for pies, desserts, sauces, and ciders. Will keep until November.

Green Sweet

The Green Sweet apple is in season from December to April. This fruit holds its flavor and keeps well into Spring. It is a grassy green color with yellow and brownish-red blushes. It does taste sweet, just like the name suggests.

Greensleeves

The Greensleeves apple is a cross between the James Grieve and Golden Delicious. Harvested in mid to late September, it is yellow in color with pinkish-orange flesh. Crunchy and sweet.

Grenadier

The Grenadier apple comes from 1862 England and is in season until October. It is large, light green with russet dots. The flesh is slightly green and is honey flavored. Great for baking.

Grimes Golden

The Grimes Golden apple is from 1832 West Virginia and is in season from October to January. It is a multi-purpose apple that keeps very well. Large and a clear yellow in color. Spicy flavor.

Grove

The Grove apple is a cross between the Ingram and Delicious. Created by the Missouri State Fruit Experiment Station in 1935, it harvests mid to late October. This apple is medium-large in size and has a conical shape. Its color is dull and features orange-red stripes over yellowish-green.
