Varieties of Apples: "Go" to "Gold"

Did you know there are over 4,700 varieties of apples? Co-ops and others are making new apple species every day. In this article, you will find a list and description of the varieties of apples that begin with "Go" through "Gold."

Gold Rush

The Gold Rush apple is also known as Co Op 38 and is from the Purdue, Rutgers, Illinois Co Op. Developed in 1994, it is conic shaped and is colored a green-yellow. The flesh is quite hard, but this fruit keeps for 6 months or more.

Golden Delicious

The Golden Delicious is one of the best known apples in the United States. From 1900 West Virginia, it harvests during mid-September to late October. It is large, conic shaped and is golden yellow. A mild, yet sweet flavor and is a great multi-purpose apple. This fruit bruises easily, so be gentle.

Golden Earl

The Golden Earl is from Minnesota and harvests mid to late September. It is a very hard apple, yellow in color and has a very coarse flesh. This apple features ripeness bumps and a very deep calyx.

Golden Haralson

The Golden Haralson is from Minnesota and is gold with a pinkish blush on one side. It taste a tad bit tart.

Golden Noble

The Golden Noble is also known as the Glow of the West and came from 1820's England. It is yellow with a creamy white flesh. Excellent for cooking and it has a high acid content.

Golden Nugget

The Golden Nugget is from Nova Scotia and is in season from October to November. It is small, conical, and long-stemmed. It has a yellow background with orange streaks.

Golden Pearmain

The Golden Pearmain harvests in mid-season and has a flat form to it. Bright russet with red when ripe.

Golden Reinette

The Golden Reinette is from 1700's Europe and is in season from October to January. It is small and its color ranges from green to a golden yellow with a dull blush and some russet spots.

Golden Russet

The Golden Russet is from 1845 New York and is in season from October to March. Preferably used for cider, it is medium in size and has russeted skin. It can range in color from a grayish green to a bronze with copper-orange cheeks.

Golden Sweet

The Golden Sweet comes from 1832 Connecticut and harvests between September to October. It is a medium apple with a light yellow color. Perfect for desserts or sauces.
