Varieties of Apples: "C" to "Ch"

This article deals with the many varieties of apples that begin with the letter "C" all the way through to "Ch."

Calville Blanc

The Calville Blanc is also called the Calville Blanc d'Hiver and was introduced in 1598. It is in season from November to March and is a gourmet cooking apple that is perfect for tarts, The vitamin C in this fruit is higher than in an orange. Coloring is yellow or light green with pale red dots.

Calville Rouge d'

The Calville Rouge d' is from 1670 France and is large with a pale red surface with just a bit of yellow. A sweet strawberry flavor that is ideal for baking.

Cameo

The Cameo apples is also known as the Carousel and is medium in size. It has a creamy white flesh and has a tangy taste that gets even better with age.

Campfield

The Campfield is from 1817 New Jersey, is medium in size and the coloring is red with tiny yellow spots. It appears to be sunk in at the ends.

Canada Reinette

The Canada Reinette is from 1777 Normandy and is in season from November to February. A multi-purpose apple that is perfect for eating, cooking, and ciders. Pale yellow background with russet patches.

Cardinal Von Galen

The Cardinal Von Galen is from Germany and harvests from September to October. It is large and bright in color and is often used for both cooking and juices.

Carlos Queen

The Carlos Queen is from Canada and is large in size with a green background and reddish blush.

Carmeliter Reinette

The Carmeliter Reinette is from 1667 France and is in season during winter. Medium in size, it is red and russeted.

Carroll

The Carroll apple is from Moscow and harvests in late August through to early September. Perfect for eating and cooking.

Cheddar Cross

The Cheddar Cross is from 1916 England, although it was not introduced until 1949. Harvesting in September, it is medium in size and has a flattened shape. Green in color and covered with russet.

Chehalis

The Chehalis apple is from Oakville, Washington and was introduced in 1965. It harvests from September to mid-October and is large in size. It is colored green-yellow and has a pink blush on the exposed side. Even though it looks like a Golden Delicious, it is bigger, crisper, and longer.

Chenango Strawberry

The Chenango Strawberry is also known as the Strawberry Chenango and has been around since 1854. From New York, it is in season from August to September and is medium in size. The yellow or green skin has a crimson stripe. Smells like a strawberry.

Cherry Cox

The Cherry Cox apple is from Denmark and is ready to pick during mid-season. It has dark red stripes or splashes and keeps well.

Chestnut Crab

The Chestnut Crab is in season from September to November and is large in size. Primarily used for cooking it has a nutty flavor. 

Chieftan

The Chieftan apple was raised in 1917 by the Iowa Experiment Station, but was not introduced until 1966. Harvests in early October, they are medium in size and bright red. 

Chinook

Chinooks are from Canada, more specifically Summerland, British Columbia. This small apple is cherry red on yellow and is perfect for desserts.

Chisel Jersey

The Chisel Jersey apple is from England and harvests in mid-November. It is used in ciders and is green with a red flush. Tastes bittersweet.
