Tallest mountains by continent known as “Seven Summits”
The 7 highest peaks from each continent are collectively coined as ‘The Seven Summit’.
1.) Oceania – Puncak Jaya
Puncak Jaya is the highest mountain in Oceania with a height of 4,884 meters above sea level. It is located in Papua province, Indonesia. It is also sometimes called Mount Carstensz or the Carstensz Pyramid. Other names include Nemangkawi, Ngga Pulu, Carstensz Toppen and Gunung Sukarno.
2.) South America – Mount Aconcagua
The tallest mountain in South America, with a height of 6,962 m, is Mount Aconcagua. This mountain is located in the Andes mountain range and is the highest mountain outside Asia.
3.) Antarctica – Vinson Massif
The highest mountain in the snow-covered continent of Antarctica, with a height of 4,892 m, is Vinson Massif. Mount Vinson is located about 1,200 km (750 mi) from the South Pole.
4.) Asia – Mount Everest
The tallest mountain in Asia is also the highest in the world – Mount Everest. Its towering height is 8,848 meters above sea level.
5.) Africa – Mount Kilimanjaro
The highest mountain in Africa is Mount Kilimanjaro. Mount Kilimanjaro, with an elevation of 5,882 meters above sea level has 3 volcanic cones, is an inactive volcano.
6.) North America – Mount McKinley
North America’s highest peak, with a height of 6,194 m, is Mount McKinley. It is also commonly called Mount Denali and is located in Alaska, USA.
7.) Europe – Mount Elbrus
Europe’s highest point, with a height of 5,642 m, is Mount Elbrus. It is an inactive volcano located in the western Caucasus mountain range in Russia.
*Australia – Mount Kosciusko
The highest mountain in Australia, with a height of 2,228 m, is Mount Kosciusko. It is located in the Snowy Mountains in Kosciusko National Park.
Tallest Mountains in the world
All the 10 highest mountains in the world are located in Asia.
1.) Mount Everest
The world’s highest mountain in the world with a stunning height of 29, 035 ft or 8,850 meter tall is Mount Everest. Considered as the “Roof of the World” it is also known as Mount Sagarmatha in Nepali and Mount Chomolungma in Tibetan which means “Mother of the Universe” or “Goddess Mother of the Snows”. Its Nepali name means “Head of the Sky”.
2.) K2
K2 is the second-highest mountain on Earth with an astounding height of 28,250 ft or 8,611 meter tall. It is located in the Karakoram segment of the Himalayan range between Pakistan and China. It is also commonly known as Qogir.
3.) Kangchenjunga
With a prolific height of 28,169 ft or 8,586 meter tall, Kangchenjunga is the world’s 3rd highest mountain. It name means “The Five Treasures of Snows”, as it contains five peaks, four of them over 8,450 meters. This mountain is located in Nepal.
4.) Lhotse
The 4th highest mountain in the world is Lhotse with a height of 27,920 ft or 8,501 meter tall. This peak, located in Nepal, is connected to Mount Everest via the South Col. This mountain contains one of the steepest in the world.
5.) Makalu
Makalu is the 5th highest mountain on Earth. It is 27,765 ft or 8,462 meter tall and is located 22 km east of Mount Everest, on the border between Nepal and Tibet. Makalu, with a shape of a four-sided pyramid, is an isolated peak.
6.) Cho Oyu
Cho Oyu is the 6th tallest mountain in the world with a height of 26,906 feet or 8,201 meter tall. Its name means “Turquoise Goddess” in Tibetan. This scenic mountain lies 20 km west of Mount Everest, at the border between China and Nepal. The mountain provides a panoramic view and beautiful sunset view.
7.) Dhaulagiri
The 26,794 feet or 8,167 meter tall Dhaulagiri is the 7th tallest mountain in the world. Its name means “White Mountain”. This mountain is located in Nepal
8.) Manaslu
With a height of 26,758 feet or 8,156 meters tall, Manaslu is the world’s 8th highest mountain. Its name is derived from the Sanskrit word Manasa which means “Mountain of the Spirit”.
One significant feature of this mountain is the subtle changes of the light on the mountain’s ice, turning from grey to pink to orange to yellow and then the ‘regular’ white.
9.) Nanga Parbat
Nanga Parbat is the 9th highest mountain in the world. It name means “Naked Mountain” in Hindi. This stunning mountain is 26,658 feet or 8,125 meters tall. This mountain is located in Pakistan.
10.) Annapurna
The 10th highest mountain in the world is Annapurna. Annapurna is a Sanskrit name which is means “Goddess of the Harvests”. It has a height of 26,545 feet or 8,091 meters.
