This is part 2 of my series of best Castle Defense Games in the App Store. For this article, I’ll be focusing on action oriented castle defense games. For a summary of what Castle Defense games are and the best Real Time Strategy Castle Defense games, feel free to read my previous article.

Action Castle Defense games, as the name goes, involve less strategy and more hands-on action. There are generally three types of Action Castle Defense games if you’d want to categorize them according to gameplay. The first are the bow and arrow defense games in which the core gameplay is to accurately aim your weapon from your castle at oncoming siege armies. Secondly, we have the flicking castle defense games in which your main weapon is your own finger and how fast you can flick away all those enemies rushing at your castle. While of course you are also equipped with other weapons, your flicking finger will be your most trusted ally. Third type of Action Castle Defense compose of straight-out shooting games. Best Action Castle Defense Games: MONSTER MAYHEM

Monster Mayhem is a great looking castle defense game with an interesting set of enemies that rivals that of Plants vs. Zombies. Although the gameplay is fairly similar to Monster Kill, another game worth mentioning, Monster Mayhem took it up several notches in every category. They managed to integrate side-challenges and worthwhile distractions such as untouchable plants, spiders that steal your coins, and speedy leprechauns that give out bonuses. The gameplay is a mix of flicking (with the knife) and shooting. In Monster Mayhem, the boss fights are also genuinely boss fights and relatively challenging. The game even includes a Monster Handbook which is an essential reference that most games of this genre sorely miss. Definitely among the best castle defense games in the App Store.

Best Action Castle Defense Games: BAR DEFENDER

Bar Defender is an action castle defense game following on the bow and arrow gameplay; but instead of shooting arrows at your attackers, as the game name goes, you throw arching projectiles ranging from cocktails, beers, liquors, and big ones like barrels and champagne cases at various enemy types all wanting to kick you out of that bar so they can demolish and build on top of it. The story is pretty hilarious including all the different enemies. The graphics are bright and colourful. The cartoon style and the mere fact that your character is the stereotypical drunkard actually bring The Simpsons to mind. The theme is quite innovative in that it’s a breath of fresh air from the usual medieval, fantasy, or modern war castle defense games. Truly worth checking out in the App Store.

Best Action Castle Defense Games: ZOMBIE SMASH

Zombie Smash is among the best and most popular zombie games available in the App Store. One of its best features is how it integrated ragdoll physics in the zombies, which means that each of them would visibly fall and get smashed in unique ways depending exactly on how you flick them. As most Castle Defense fans know, this genre heavily, or used to, rely on flicking insanely on the screen. And when the enemies come in hordes, it unfortunately becomes a game of how fast and slippery your fingers are, which obviously isn’t any fun at all. Zombie Smash addressed that concern by implementing various stages that specify the type of weapon you can use for certain levels. In general, your list of weapons is long, and the differences are stark. Unlike other games where flicking will still save you more than other weapons would, Zombie Smash has powerful weapons that are not only enjoyable to use but are essential in progressing in the later stages. Fairly similar and also worth looking at if you’re into flicking galore castle defense games is Knights Onrush.

Best Action Castle Defense Games: ZOMBIE WONDERLAND

Zombie Wonderland is a pure action castle defense game. To most zombie purists, this game, which is reminiscent of typical movie scenes where the characters are trapped in a house with zombies outside creeping closer and slowly breaking through the windows, is what zombie games should have been all along. In this game, you play the character tasked with helping out people in your neighbourhood stave off those pesky zombies such as from your Aunt’s house, your friend’s garage, and even from your neighbourhood bar. Also a trademark of zombie movies, you get to bombard your windows with wooden planks. Another plus is that this game is a universal application.
