7 Insider Tips for Student Discounts

1. Find deals on your University’s site.

One of the first places you should look for a student discount is on your school’s official website. Usually, you can find discounts on electronics, like laptops, headphones, and more.

2. Not every place displays they have a student discount — ask the cashier.

Don’t just assume the person checking you out will ask if you’re a student either. Instead, simply call ahead or ask a store attendant if they offer any discounts for students.

3. Always have your ID on hand for in-person purchases.

Most retail stores won’t offer you their student discount without proof. Save yourself some time and energy by making sure to always carry around your student ID with you.

4. Insurance discounts may be contingent on good grades.

You thought it was only your parents who cared if you got good grades, huh? Well, think again. Some companies (think: auto insurance companies) will reward you by offering a student discount depending on your grade point average. Don’t worry you don’t have to get a 4.0 — oftentimes, a 3.0-grade point average or higher will qualify you. (But make sure to double-check with each retailer)

5. Keep that .edu email for a while to get discounts.

For some online retailers, all you need is your student email to obtain the student discount. Once you graduate, you still have your student email for a little bit longer. Most students are so excited to have graduated, they can’t wait to get rid of this email address. But wait — hold onto that email address as long as you can so you can still get that lovely student discount.

6. For some retailers, there are discounted days of the week.

Some stores offer specific days you can get a deal. You will usually find this for entertainment venues, like movie theaters or museums. Make sure you’re going on the most optimal day to get that discount.

7. Remember to make your purchases during “back-to-school” events.

Would you like a discount on top of a discount? Well, make sure to do your big shopping during these back-to-school sales and take advantage of these discounts.
