Who Qualifies For Military Discounts?

There is no one size fits all standard for discount eligibility. Who qualifies for a discount is confusing because the rules are set by each store individually. 

Here are the various groups that most often eligible: 

• Active duty members
• Veterans 
• Military family members (which would include: spouses, dependents, immediate family) 
• Disabled military personnel 
• National Guard 
• Reservists

How To Find Military Discounts (Beyond This List)

Ask — The number one way to get the most bang for your buck starts with asking. Often, you’re not even aware a store offers a military discount. Asking a store clerk should always be your first line of defense. If you feel uncomfortable asking in person, pick up the phone and talk to a store attendant. Be sure to also ask about eligibility requirements beforehand. 

How To Redeem A Military Discount:

Remember to have your proof of identity handy. Here are the different ways to redeem your discount:

• Military ID card — The easiest way to prove you are eligible for a discount is to show your military ID card. 
• VA benefits photo ID card & DD-214 document— oftentimes, Veterans who are provided VA benefits will most often carry an ID card. This can be shown at stores to establish your veteran status. Another document you can use is your DD-214 form that shows your proof of service within the military.
• ID.me — If you’re looking to get a military discount at an online store, you will probably want to register at ID.me. Through ID.me, you will need to upload your documents to show your veteran status. Many stores use ID.me to offer a military discount for online purchases. 
• DD Form 1173 — this form can be used for dependents of active-duty members and retired military members.  

Pro-tip for Getting A Military Discount: 

Shop on holidays associated with members of the military. Stores that might not offer a military discount are more likely to offer a deal on or near these holidays:

• Memorial Day 
• Independence Day 
• Veterans Day
