There really is a huge choice of flavours and types for the whisky drinker. Here we will take a look at one of the most famous whisky distilleries in Scotland, that of Dalmore.

Signature Malt

The signature malt of the Dalmore whisky distillery has to be the Dalmore 12 year old which is a strong, muscular Highland malt whisky. There are notes of orange mixed in with a solid oak taste that comes together to make a delightful whisky that the palate will enjoy. Special mention must also go to the Dalmore 21 year old which is a whisky with hints of both orange and grapefruit which come together with the ‘ageing’ wood to make a perfect whisky taste.

The Distillery

The Dalmore whisky distillery is situated in the Alness region of Ross-Shire somewhere near the East Highland coastal road. It is quite a trek to travel to the Dalmore distillery as it somewhat far away from normal civilization, but it is well worth the trip even if just for the beautiful, picture-postcard views that the Highlands have to offer around the Dalmore distillery. The whisky produced at the Dalmore distillery is certainly on its way up. It has always been a top quality whisky that is produced there, but it is only in recent years that the whisky world has truly started to sit up and take real notice of it.

In recent years, the Dalmore distillery has sold some of its oldest whiskies for tens of thousands of pounds at auction. Some of those were older than 60 years old. Of course, you wouldn’t need to spend tens of thousands of pounds to get your hands on a top quality whisky, the Dalmore 12 year old is much cheaper than that and once you taste it you will see the quality straight away. The Dalmore distillery has a visitor centre that is open from Monday to Friday but it is always worth, if you are planning to visit, to book in advance; weekend appointments can also be made.

In April 2005, a bottle of 62 year old Dalmore whisky sold at an auction for a grand total of £32,000. The whisky was a blend of casks from 1868, 1878, 1922, 1926 and 1939. Not sure about the person who paid such a huge sum for a bottle of whisky, but it goes to show how serious some people take their whisky!
