Make Your Own Beautiful Art Work by Creating a Simple Garden
EducationMake Your Own Beautiful Art Work by Creating a Simple Garden
Creating a unique and interesting garden to suit your own style and tastes could prove to be much easier than you actually think. Many people believe that a beautiful garden is solely based on how much money they paid for the design or how much money was put into it, however; I for one do not believe that for a second. A garden is all about how it makes you feel while in it and if you are at one with it, it will naturally make you feel happy, especially if you created it yourself.

If you stop and take the time to look around in the area you live in, no matter where it is located, you will not see one design, you will see many, lots of different people expressing their opinion about how their garden should look with one common interest, the way they feel while in their garden. Take a wild flower garden in nature for example, sure its nature's intricate design but that is how nature intended it to look, wild and free, nature's inexpensive creation.
Now if you can imagine standing within your own garden, one that you created yourself, regardless of how much money was put into it, or the fact you could have traded and swapped plants with friends or started the seeds yourself and your now listening to the chirping of the birds, the buzzing of the bees and the rustling of the wind as it blows through it, you will come to realize that this garden is your own little retreat, unaffected by everything, not only giving you a place where you feel tranquil and happy but a place where you can freely express yourself without feeling any sort of burden or embarrassment by doing so.

The size of the garden should not even matter, in fact it does not have to be a large garden to enjoy it, it can be tiny! I often see stunning paintings of just roses and baby's breath and want to buy them solely based on their beauty, however; in reality, as a gardener it is not hard to plant that image right into a container! Gardens are a living art and the landscape surrounding you, a live canvas waiting to be painted with many the many different colors and textures that flowers, plants, shrubs and trees have to offer. Your garden can be a real live painting right before you very eyes splashed with brilliant colors and textures that you yourself choose!

So now that you have read why you should create a garden the next step is to make one! The first thing you will have to do is to pick the location where you want your garden to be, preferably one where you can sit and enjoy your own work, whether it is in the ground or in containers.
The second thing is to decide what type of garden you want, wildflower, formal or cottage.
If you want the garden to look natural, for ideas take a walk through a meadow or woods, this will undoubtedly teach you a few things as well as give you the inspiration you need to get your creative side working. Take note that if going for a natural look there are varying heights, colors and textures, almost flowing as though they have existed there since the beginning of time. Hence the world wild or natural. One suggestion for this type of garden is scattering wildflower seeds into the chosen site. Both cheap and effective as well as capable of bringing you the type of beauty you require.
If going for a formal look, you will want a lot of repetition and a balance between the plants. For example if planting a shrub in the middle choose the same plant for each side of it and then again another plant for each side of the plant next to the shrub and so on. For ideas visit a nursery as everything is in order there, side by side and this will give you ideas as well as give you an idea as to the type of plants you want.
If going for a cottage garden where everything is bursting with different flowers, heights, colors and textures, be as creative as you like. In most true cottage gardens the flowers or plants are planted wherever you can find a formidable space to grow them. My own personal style is incorporating the formal with the cottage but this is my own unique style because I like balance, however; I also like lots of different flowers and colors but I suggest sticking with what you like!

The next thing to do is buy a shovel, trowel and edger and start digging but don't over do it, just do a little at a time if you feel that is all you are up to.
*Remove sod and rocks and loosen all soil.
*Egde the garden to the desired shape.
*Add compost and mix with already loosened soil.
*Visit local nursery or order some plant catalogs.
*Choose plants.
*Buy plants or grow from seeds.
*Read instructions on plants.
*Plant the plants or seeds.
*Water and feed as required
(Containers)
*If planting containers buy plants and soil.
*Fill containers to about half full, add plant and add more soil till it is packed in.
(A suggestion I have for containers is to group pots together, it makes for a much better display. If only going with one plant per pot and not grouping try and get a large showy plant, this also creates a better visual display.)
*After planting, water and feed as required.
The main thing to do now is watch your garden flourish and grow and most of all enjoy your art. It really is as easy as that and the best thing about this type of art is that you can choose to revise it at any point in time.

If unsure about anything hire a professional, however; this does kind of defeat the purpose as the idea here is to use your own creativeness and place your own stamp upon your little retreat. A way I suggest to get around this is make your garden on paper including the plants. Hire a local gardener as this will dramatically cut the costs compared to hiring a landscaper or designer and this way it also gives you full control over the project rather then someone else taking control.
At the end of the day it is amazing how a good day in the garden will cause you to a have a great night's sleep! Remember gardening does not have to be stressful, gardening can actually help you to forget about life's problems and worries because when gardening you tend to forget about everything else but the task at hand as you are using your mind to create and give life.
Last but not least, be proud of what you have created for you have just added another work of beauty to the world.
