Liberty University, located in Lynchburg, Virginia, was founded in 1971 by Jerry Falwell and Elmer Townes. Liberty University is a Christian school that presents all courses from a Christian perspective. Some master’s degrees in education are offered in a blended format; however others can be completed without visiting the physical campus. In the blended format degrees, courses called intensives require one week on campus, all other classes are 100% online. As of January 2012, approximately 60,000 students attend classes through Liberty University’s online and brick and mortar campuses. The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accredit Liberty’s School of Education.
Master’s Degrees in Education
Master of Arts
Liberty University Online offers three Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) degrees leading to initial licensure in Virginia. These are in the specialties of Elementary Education, Secondary Education and Special Education. All are offered in a blended format. Three intensives are required, as well as testing for the Virginia teaching credential. No prior teaching experience is required, and the programs are open to anyone with a bachelor’s degree.
Master of Education
Eleven Master of Education (M.Ed.) degrees are offered. Each of these requires a current teaching license. According to the Liberty University Online website, these vary in delivery format. Liberty University Online offers two Master of Science programs in Sports Management: Outdoor Adventure and Sports Administration. These are both delivered completely online. Thesis and non-thesis tracks are available.
Admission Requirements
To be admitted to Liberty University Online’s graduate programs in Education, applicants must have at least a bachelor’s degree from a regionally or nationally accredited school. The accrediting agency must be recognized by the United States Department of Education. Although unofficial transcripts can be used for admissions purposes, an official, sealed transcript is required. Some programs require a letter of recommendation.
