Tracking Your Smoking Pattern

Researches show that many ex-smokers have found that tracking their smoking pattern helped them identify situations in which they were more likely to smoke.  This enabled them to plan in advanced how they could deal with these urges the next time they arise.  It may be difficult in the beginning to keep track because you may light up without being aware of it.  Try wrapping that tally sheet around your pack of cigarettes so that you won't forget to record.

According to the Singaporean Ministry of Health, if your main reason for smoking is addiction to nicotine, the best ways to quit smoking:

  • Spend as much time as possible in places where smoking is not allowed, such as cinemas, shopping centers and libraries.

  • Think of yourself as a non-smoker.  Hang up "No Smoking" signs to remind yourself.
  • Avoid people who smoke and smoke-filled places like bar especially when you have withdrawal symptoms or cigarette cravings.

  • Change your daily routine to break up your patterns and habits.  For example, instead of smoking after meals, get up from table and brush your teeth.
  • Munch on healthy snacks like carrot, cucumber, celery and fruits when you miss having something in your mouth.

  • Do things that require you to use your hands, like household chores, handicraft or gardening.

If psychological dependence on  cigarettes us your main problem; best way to quit smoking:

  • Learn relaxation techniques like deep breathing exercises and muscle relaxation.
  • Exercise regularly.  Regular exercise relieve stress and makes you feel more energetic.
  • Avoid feeling bored by taking up new activities and hobbies.

It Takes Time to Quit

Deciding to stop smoking is an excellent choice but is does take time and commitment.  According to the Singaporean Ministry of Health, although you do it for yourself, you don't have to do it by yourself.  The encouragement and support of those who care about you will help you break that smoking habit.

Choose someone whom you are close to, who will listen to you and whom you can call upon when you feel the urge to smoke.  This may be your family and close friends.  It may also be one of your coworkers.  After all, most of you actually spend more time at work with your colleagues than with family members.  Let them know that you are committed to succeed at this time but that you will need their support and encouragement.  Discuss with them how exactly they can help you.
