Job Overview

The HR Generalist position is one of several vital functions of human resources. The HR generalist basically helps out in every aspect of human resources; he/she provides operational support for the HR department.  In order to be successful in this role, an individual would need to have great multi-tasking skills and possess extensive knowledge of all facets of Human Resources.  This position is perhaps the most diverse function in Human Resources, unlike HR specialist who primarily focuses on a specific HR task under the direction of a HR Generalist. The Generalist is involved in a wide-range of HR projects from recruitment and selection, performance management, training and development, compensation and benefits, procedures and polices, employee relations, and risk management. The HR Generalist generally reports to the department manager or a director.

Job requirements

The ideal individual must be able to independently perform all duties successfully. He/she must be detailed-oriented, have excellent computer skills, have a working knowledge of MS Office-including word, excel and power point. Most employers also require that you have experience with HRIS (Human Resource Information System) as well. In addition, one must have excellent interpersonal skills, organizational skills, time management skills, communication skills, analytical skills, and problem-solving skills.  Must also have good oral and written skills; and as required for all HR positions, this individual must be able to maintain a high level of confidentiality.

Education requirements

The minimal education requirement is a Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Communications, Business Administration, Management, or other business related discipline. Some employers may also require that you have PHR certification, (Professional in Human Resources) along with your degree and three-five years of experience in Human Resources.

Training

In some cases, basic training is provided for those individuals who meet the minimal requirement for this position.  Otherwise, most employers expect you to “hit the ground running” once hired, and require that you have three-five years of experience, as well. 

Salary

The salary for a HR Generalist can vary depending up the company, industry, location, and years of experience.  According to Pay Scale, the salary range in 2011 for a HR Generalist in the United States is $33,976 - $66.964.  Glassdoor.com list the salary range for a HR Generalist, $32,000- $58,000, with the average salary being $49,583.

Job prospects

The future for the HR Generalist looks very promising. This career is in demand and many companies are seeking to hire HR Generalist to carry out a wide-range of HR duties. This job offers flexibility and growth potential.  Many Generalist further his/her education by obtaining a graduate degree and eventually move upward to become HR Managers and Directors.
