How to Train a Rottweiler
EducationHow to Train a Rottweiler
Living with a well-trained Rottweiler can be a wonderful member of the household family. It can bond very nicely with children and could keep your children busy when you don’t have enough time to look after the kids. However, a Rottweiler might not be responsible to do the job if it isn’t in the right mood. It can easily cause harm to any member of the family and would need more attention than anything else. This will only be a hazard if the Rottweiler hasn’t been trained properly. Learn how to train the dog as usual but also to keep your home secure from any incidents.
When is the Right Time to Train my Dog?
There isn’t really a set age to train your Rottweiler. But it is recommended to train your dog when he is a young puppy. If any incidents occur at home or outside, you won’t expect any major injuries from their bites. Training an adult dog will be more difficult with all the children at home where the safety risk is low.
1) Teach your Dog to Sit!
Teaching the dog to sit down is relevantly easy. This job can help you accomplish a group of others including grooming, feeding, playing games and relaxing. Make sure before you do this test, keep the dog standing in front of you. Say the word ‘Sit’ and push its rear end down. Remember to do this gently so you don’t create any discomfort to the dog. When he is sitting, continuously mention the word ‘Sit’ and he should slowly begin to understand. It is similar to how a person who learns a new language. Once he stands up again, tell him to sit and if he still doesn’t, repeat the process of pushing down his rear. In a very short time, he would have learned what to do by hearing your command. Rottweiler’s would usually do anything to please its owner but still treat him for being a good boy.
2) Broaden your Dog’s Social Network!
Just like the way you enjoy getting to know more people out of the box. Having a dog going through the same process is just as normal. You need to take him out of your house on a regular basis and allow him to meet other people. Your friends may also have their own dogs which could be a great way for your dog to socialize. Don’t waste its childhood at home. The earlier they come across each other, the easier the job will be when they grow up. By that time, you won’t need to worry as often. Training them during their childhood can help you break up any fights among the groups. If they grow in age and size, the job will certainly be harder than you would expect.
3) Teach your Dog to Paw!
This trick is necessary to teach if you’re planning on clipping your dog’s nails. It is easy as teaching him ‘Sit’ and shouldn’t take long. Make him sit down before you paw or he will trip. Say the word ‘Paw’ and reach down and take the paw into your hand. It may take a while for him to learn the meaning of the word. But keep repeating the process with praise and ask your dog for his paw without lifting it. If he can do it by himself, praise him and reward him with a treat. On the other hand, if he struggles to understand what you’re saying, stop the task and go away for at least 10-20 minutes. Once enough time has passed, come back and repeat the task.
4) Teach your Dog the Meaning of ‘No’!
There will be times when your Rottweiler will have some bad habits which you will need to get rid of. They love playing around and love to keep themselves busy. Nevertheless, this means that your dog will choose to bite and nibble on your household furniture if they are not supplied by toys. When this occurs, sharply say ‘No’ or ‘Stop’ and bring him away from the area. Make sure the command is said in a different tone. Walk away but don’t take your eyes off him and see if he goes back. If he does, repeat the same process until he realizes that he isn’t doing the right thing. You may find this very irritating but don’t choose to yell or shout at him because this can send bad signals to the Rottweiler. Having taught the dog what is right and wrong is a good step towards a thoughtful dog who would know how to control his behaviour in times when it is important.
5) Protecting your Children!
Training your dog to socialize with children is vital. Having too many children in the house with an untrained dog is very dangerous as the likelihood of major incidents is high. It is recommended to train your dog in obedience classes along with daily house training.
• Playing risky games:
Children love playing with anything including pets. They may choose to chase it around the house or yard without thought as this is the nature of children. However, once a Rottweiler grows up to be an adult, the safety level will be significantly low. Avoid any such games being played at the time to prevent accidents.
• Include your children when training:
It is best to include your children when training the dog to sit, come, stop and learn the commands of everything else. This helps the dog to listen to everyone in the family rather than focusing on the owner. In addition, this would help keep the dog away from you when he wants to be next to you in every part of your life. Sometimes, enclosing you when you require some space alone can be frustrating.
Conclusion
Training a Rottweiler isn’t hard and can be done with time and effort. A well-trained dog of any kind will show love and mercy to any human being. Rottweilers are best at guarding your property but as an owner, you need to show them who is likely to be a stranger and who is a friend or they may choose to attack anyone of every age. These attacks can be fatal and dangerous. But in all, enjoy a life with a pet friend.
