We all desire to eat or do something that we all love. Whether it is eating candy, sweets, chocolates or junk food, we crave for something to relieve a satisfaction. Sometimes, we may even waste money on craving for something that we eventually give up resisting. However, sometimes if we’re craving for the wrong things, somehow we need to stop this desire to help us prevent ruining our diet. Fortunately, there are a few ways you can help reduce junk food cravings. Let us first read what the causes of food cravings are.

Causes of Food Cravings

The main cause of food cravings is due to low levels of blood sugar. However, hormonal and emotional causes could also contribute to food cravings.

Hormonal Cause:

Hormonal swings have an influence on food cravings. Men who aren’t affected by hormone imbalance don’t develop much food cravings than women. Most cravings occur when a women is pregnant or in the week prior to menstruation.

Emotional Cause:

There are quite a few emotional causes of food cravings. These include stress, depression and boredom. Sometimes, a person might yearn for food and could overeat which in turn might affect their lifestyle.

Blood Sugar

One main cause of food cravings is the lack of blood sugar in the body. This occurs because you’re either eating low calorie diets or spending too much time not eating food at all which increase hunger and food cravings.

In other cases, blood sugar levels might change over time and cause further cravings, mood changes, water retention and too much thirst. This would occur because a person could be eating the wrong type of carbohydrates.

How to Reduce Food Cravings

These suggestions are not remedies but can help you significantly reduce food cravings. In most cases, you only require a boost to your blood sugar to heal these addictions.

1) Eat Regular Throughout the Day

Skipping meals for a long time until the next meal will cause your blood sugar levels to fall which will lead to food cravings. It is better that you avoid eating for only 3-4 hours before the next meal. You will realize that small meals such as a cake slice or a bread loaf can last several hours until you’re hungry again. Regular eating can help your metabolism burn calories more quickly and reduce cravings.

2) Less Sugar and Salt

Extra salt and sugar can increase food cravings. This is why your food cravings don’t stop because you eat too much refined foods such as cakes, cookies, chocolates, sweets, breakfast cereal and candy. Reducing your intake on all these foods and eating more natural sources such as fruits and vegetables can help give you the healthy nutrients you need and reduce food cravings.

You can reduce your food cravings by eating more healthy foods. Apart from fruits and vegetables, there are a host of other healthy foods you can try.

Low-GI Carbs:

• Pasta

• Whole grain breads

• Brown rice

• Noodles

• Sweet potatoes

High Fiber Foods:

Apples

• Beans

• Oats

Lower-GI Snack Foods:

• Strawberries

• Nuts

• Seeds

• Banana

• Dried fruit
