How to Get to Know People: Conversation Starters

While some find making friends easy and effortless others find getting to know people a serious challenge. If you are facing a new neighborhood or a new school you might find some of these questions helpful in approaching new people and making friends. You might want to use these in a formal way for your small group. You can modify the questions to be more suitable for your age.

Where did you grow up? Why/How did you end up here?

How many brothers and sisters do you have? Where do you fall in the birth order?

What is your favorite thing to do when you have a totally free day?

What is your favorite thing to do when you have a free hour?

What is your favorite food or meal? Do you like to cook?

What is your favorite book? What do you like to read generally? Do you have a favorite author or authors?

What is your favorite candy bar and your favorite cookie?

What is your favorite sport? Do you like to play sports? Do you like to watch sports?

What is your favorite kind of music and what is your favorite song or piece of music?

What do/did you want to be when you grow up? Have you achieved that or are you working on that still?

How many kids do you have/want ? What are their names or what children’s names do you like.

What is your favorite building or architectural structure? Have you been there?

What place would you like to know about? What place would you like to visit?

What period in history intrigues you? Why?

What historical individual would you like to know more about? Why?

What is/was your favorite thing about your mom? Tell about one thing that your mom taught you that you have never forgotten.

What is/was your favorite thing about your dad? Tell about one thing that your dad taught you that you have never forgotten.

Describe a memorable day in the life of your family when you were a child.

Do you play a musical instrument? What instruments do you like hearing?

What is your favorite type of art? Do you have a favorite artist? Do you have a favorite piece of art?

Have you ever seen a play? Which ones? Do you like theater?

Do you like building things? What kind of materials do you like working with?

What would you like to learn about cars? What kind of car do you have? If you could have your dream car what would it be?

What would/could you teach others about if asked?

What do you want to be doing in five years?

What do you want to be doing in ten years?

What are/were your favorite subjects in school?

What is your favorite movie? What is your favorite genre of movies? Who do you think is a great contemporary actor?

What is the most unusual thing you ever did?

What is the strangest food you ever ate? What were the circumstances?
