Common Human Foods That Are Toxic to Dogs
EducationCommon Human Foods That Are Toxic to Dogs
Most dog owners are well aware that chocolate is poisonous to dogs, but did you know that a hamburger or turkey dinner could also make your dog very ill? Some of these foods might not be deadly to dogs, all are potentially harmful and should be avoided.
Hamburgers Could be Toxic for Dogs
Hamburgers often contain bits of garlic and, or, onions, both of which are bad for dogs and can cause anemia (especially onions). The onions might be on top of the burger, or finely chopped up in the meat patty itself. Some burgers contain unusual toppings, such as avocado and mushrooms, which are also known to be toxic to dogs, more on them later.
Turkey Dinner
It is not so much the turkey that is a concern, rather it is the gravy and stuffing. These could contain garlic and, or onions, but as well some stuffing contains raisins, and raisins can be toxic to dogs.
Grapes and Raisins
Since we just mentioned raisins, it makes sense to talk about grapes and raisins in general. Even a small handful is all that is needed to cause problems in some dogs. These have been linked to kidney failure, and may cause vomiting.
Avocados
Avocados contain persin which is toxic to dogs and can cause them to vomit or have diarrhea.
Mushrooms
Mushrooms can make dogs very ill, and in some cases can be fatal.
Raw Eggs
Although many people advocate feeding raw eggs to dogs, and other pets, there are a couple concerns with eggs. Raw eggs can cause salmonella poisoning in a dog, and even more concerning, if fed on a regular basis, they can cause the dog to have problems absorbing Vitamin B. Cooked eggs are fine.
Raw Fish
As with the eggs, feeding of raw fish can lead to a deficiency of Vitamin B, in this case specifically Vitamin B1, thiamine. Feeding a diet of raw fish can eventually cause muscle problems, and possibly death if fed over a long time.
Nuts
Macadamia nuts are most concerning but any type of nut could be an issue for a dog who is sensitive, or allergic, to them. Macadamia nuts have been noted to be toxic at the rate of 1 nut per pound of dog, causing them to shake, have a fever, become paralyzed, or even die.
Caffeine
Caffeine, as found in coffee and tea, can be toxic to dogs, even fatally so.
Toothpaste
Not exactly a food, but human toothpaste often contains a sweetening ingredient, xylitol that is toxic to dogs. There is other toothpaste made for brushing a dog's teeth.
Diet Treats
As with toothpaste, diet treats for humans often contain xylitol, which is toxic for dogs.
Note: If you suspect your dog has consumed a toxic food or any poison, contact your veterinarian, you may need to induce vomiting.
