Do cats always land on their feet

Cat owner seem to be careless about letting their pets perch on windowsills, or loiter on balconies and terraces.  They believe that cats always survive falls from high altitudes.

Reasons why cat always land on their feet:

  • Sense of balance.  Cat has a sense of balance.  According to researchers cats amazing sense of balance is due to it's vestibular, musculoskeletal system, and strong tail.  Vestibular is a tiny, fluid-filled organ in the inner ear.  The canals of this organ are lined with millions of sensitive hairs that detect movement in the fluid.  The fluid in its inner ear will shift if a cat falls.  The cat's instinct is to rotate its head until the fluid is level. It's body will then shift to follow it's head while it's tail acts as a counterbalance.  This action usually enables a cat to land on it's feet.
  • Supple muscle and supple spine.  A cat has a supple muscles and a supple spine.  It's muscles and spine can respond instantly to whatever movement it chooses to make.  It's spine actually has thirty vertebrae (five more than humans), which would explain it's natural gracefulness and agility.

Cats always survive falls?

While cats have been known to survive an 18-TH storey fall, they can be more seriously injured or even die from falling from a shorter distance say 10 to 12 feet.  This is so because shorter distance does not give them enough time to adjust their position so that they can land on their feet.

According to researcher although cats like to perch on high places, their survival instinct prevents them from deliberately jumping from altitudes that they know are dangerous.  This is the reason why they sometimes have to be rescued from trees.  Their claws allow them to cling to the bark of trees but of limited use on surfaces like concrete or brick surfaces.

If a cat does fall from a high altitude, it should be immediately taken to the veterinarian, advices the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.  To conclude cats usually land on their feet, but not always.  Even if they do, they can sustain serious injuries.  However agile they are, cats are not immune to the laws of Physics nor are they endowed with some sort of super power that can help them defy death added an American veterinarians.

  • Follow you around. Cats tend to follow you around.  Cats may not follow immediately but after a moment or two, your cat may jump on your lap or may find a chair nearby.  Either way, they prefer to spend time with you.
  • Being depressed. Cats become slightly depressed.   They are depressed when you leave, and greet you enthusiastically upon your return.
  • Cat kiss.  Cat send subtle cat signals of affection.  Cats send subtle cat signal of affection throughout the days.  These often take the form of classic cat kiss, staring at you adoringly, then squinting  or slowly closing their eyes.  They may rub their head upon you and purr.
  • Lie on her back.   Cats lie on their back with their stomach exposed.  This is a sign of trust, because your cat is now in a vulnerable position.  This is a cats affection at it's most intense.  They can't hold your hand, and they are not given the chance to kiss you.  This is how your pet show this sort of affection called love.
