What is cataract?
Cataract is a condition where the lens of the eye becomes cloudy or opaque. Consequently, the patient’s visual acuity is greatly hampered. When the lens becomes opaque, the entrance of light in to the eye is influenced, thus affecting the vision.
Causes of Cataract
- Diminished nourishment to the lens is the primary cause for the development of cataract.
- Oxidative damage by free radicals is another significant factor
- Deposition of salts between the lens fibers, impinges them, causing disintegration and cloudiness
- Cataract is also associated with certain disorders like: diabetes, gall bladder diseases, gastrointestinal tract diseases and fatty acid intolerance
Symptoms of Cataract
The first symptom that manifests is blurring of the vision. As the disorder progresses, the patient may complain of spots before the eyes or double vision. In advanced stages of cataract, objects appear as blobs of light.
Also, on examination, the pupil appears grey-white.
Preventing Cataract Effectively
- Carrot: Carrots are loaded with vitamin A, which is a powerful anti-oxidant. It fights free radical damage and protects the lens. Keeping the consumption of carrots high helps ward off the development of cataract. Nutritionists, world over recommend consuming 200 ml of fresh carrot juice, twice, everyday.
- Spinach: Spinach is also a very rich source of vitamin A. Along side; it supplies large amounts of glutathione, which is a powerful component that prevents aging and inflammations. Spinach facilitates healthy functioning of the lens.
- Garlic: Research says, garlic helps to clear up deposits and crystalline lenses effectively. What’s more, it battles oxidative damage and staves off age related cataract successfully. Consume 3 to 5 flakes of raw garlic every day.
In conjunction with an appropriate diet, practice Yoga for the eyes. These exercises help relax the muscles of the eyes, and strengthen the lens fibers. Sustained practice promises to prevent the development of cataract.
