Troubleshooting the Floppy Disk Drive

The floppy disk drive may have some problems. These problems may damage the floppy disk and important data stored on a floppy disk. You can troubleshoot the floppy disk drive to correct any errors that the floppy disk drive may have.

Cannot Detect the Floppy Disk Drive

When the system is unable to find floppy disk drive, it displays an error message. The reason for the floppy disk drive not being detected is that, the floppy disk drive is not properly installed or configured or there is some hardware conflict.

• Check that the floppy disk drive is appropriately configured in the B/OS settings.

• Unplug any new hardware installed as the hardware may conflict with the floppy disk drive.

• Check if the cable connecting the floppy disk drive to the motherboard is properly connected.

• The floppy disk drive may be defective.

Unable to Read or Write Data on the Floppy Disk

When the floppy disk drive is unable to read the inserted floppy disk, it displays an error message reason for the floppy disk drive not able to read the floppy disk is that the floppy disk is corrupted or the floppy disk drive is bad.

• Check if the write protect tab is in the read write mode if you cannot write data on the floppy disk.

• Check that the floppy disk is formatted if the floppy disk is a new.

• Insert a different floppy disk in the floppy disk drive, if the floppy disk drive reads the floppy disk then the floppy disk must be corrupt.

• Clean the head of the floppy disk drive using a head cleaning floppy.

• Check if the read write head is misaligned.

Cleaning floppy drive using FDD cleaning kit

If the floppy disc drive head becomes dirty, data errors may occur. Dirt also results in scratching of the disc. To avoid such problems regular cleaning of the floppy drive is required. The user can use the FDD cleaning kit for this purpose. FDD kit looks like a floppy disc and consists of a special case and a special cleaner fluid.

1. Put a few drops of cleaning liquid on to the cleaning disk that comes with floppy cleaning kit.

2. Insert the cleaning disc into the disc drive immediately and execute a read operation or any kind of load operation. An error message will come into sight.

3. Press the eject button after 10 seconds and remove the cleaning disk.

4. Use the disc drive only when the cleaning liquid is dried.

5. Insert a new floppy disc and check.
