Social Media Optimization For Your Site
EducationSocial Media Optimization For Your Site
Social Media Optimization or SMO is one of the most important things you can do for your site these days, apart from get it on the first page of a popular Google search.
Social media sites like Facebook and Twitter are the perfect way to drive a lot of traffic to your business, it's just a matter of how you do it, and that's what this article is about.
First, you have to determine if your site has a widespread appeal, or if there are only a small percentage of people that might be interested in what you have to sell.
This will determine what sort of social media marketing campaign you will come up with. If nobody has heard of you before, they will neither search for you, or click on your tweets, so you might be better off by paying for some StumbleUpon ads, or something that gets your site in front of people at random.
If you were a musician, you might make a You Tube video, and get a ton of views on it, so it shows up alongside other music videos, and in a You Tube and Google search for a specific keyword phrase.

Different Social Media Optimization Techniques
Google is your friend, and a lot of social media marketing techniques are really just another way to get a page on a popular Google search. For example, you can make a Facebook page, and the more back links you make to it, and the more likes you get, the better it does on Google.
Facebook page likes are really good if they are targeted, and also good if they're not, because when you post something on the wall of your page, it shows up on the news feeds of everyone who likes the page, and you can send a message out to them.
You have to know a lot about SEO to make a successful Facebook page or You Tube video, unless people are searching for it on those sites, and there is little competition.
Twitter is a bit easier to understand. You get a whole bunch of followers, and tweet to them all through the day. It works the best if your site has a widespread appeal to lots of different people.
StumbleUpon is one of my favorite sites for viral content. Viral meaning so funny or interesting that a percentage of the people that saw it would share it with their friends, and then a percentage of those people would share it with theirs.
The most popular categories on StumbleUpon are humor, bizarre, recipes, photography, music and art, and you can't expect huge results unless you have a really entertaining or useful page.
Basically, social media optimization works the best when you have a site that everyone likes, because you put the social buttons on your page, and they are so impressed, they click like, and tweet, and Google plus one, and so it gets shared with the world.
In the future, I predict that Google will play less of a role in how many people visit a site than what they stumble upon on social sites, and Google itself says they place great importance on social signals.
