Having sensitive teeth means feeling mild pain that may become severe, with time and continue for several hours. Sensitivity is felt in the teeth to hot, cold, sweet and acidic foods and sometimes to cold air catching the teeth. Sensitivity is a feeling of sensation in the tissues under the dentin (major component of the tooth). Sensitive teeth can make someone’s life miserable. Usually it is not continues, comes and goes, but it is regular and without delay to hot and cold food and pressure. It becomes impossible to enjoy favorite cold or hot food. Tooth sensitivity is very common. Approximately half of the population, especially women, is suffering this problem.
Causes of sensitive teeth:
The problem of sensitivity starts when the dentin recedes. Dentin is protected by the layers of animal and cemantus. The tissues under the dentin become exposed and sensitive when the dentin loses these layers. Dentin contains thousands of small channels. These channels run down to the center of the tooth. When the dentin is exposed due to some reason the fluid in these channels moves and causes irritation.
There are two main reasons of dentin recession: (1) Brushing hard the teeth. Most of people brush their teeth very harsh and with this continuous action they lose their gum tissues which protect the roots. (2) Plaque builds up around the gums and teeth if they are not cleaned properly and regularly. With the passage of time this plaque becomes tarter. These bacteria in the tarter cause the gum recession.
A cracked tooth can cause sensitivity too. Some patients feel sensitivity after tooth bleaching. Dental instruments, accidently, can also cause gum tissues loss. Tooth bleaching can cause sensitivity for 2 to 3 days.
Sucking the hard candies can cause gum recession and consequently sensitivity to teeth. Chewing tobacco is a common habit among some teenagers which cause the sensitivity to teeth.
Diagnoses and home remedies:
It is very important to know the reason of the pain or sensitivity of teeth. Proper treatment is possible after diagnosing the cause. Ignoring the teeth sensitivity can cause other oral diseases. Brush your teeth regularly to avoid the plaque around the gums. A tarter control toothpaste can also cause the sensitivity.
Many brands of toothpastes are available in the market to reduce the pain. Sensitizing tooth pastes can protect exposed dentin. These toothpastes can be rubbed to the teeth for a few minutes. A continuous use of these toothpastes can help to prevent the sensitivity. Gently brush your teeth and be very careful near the area of gums. Many dentists suggest the use of advanced electric tooth brush which can control the pressure on the teeth, we put during brushing them. Florid rinse, available almost all pharmacies, can help prevent the pain. A florid gel can be applied to the effected teeth.
Salt water rinse can help to reduce the toothache but in case of sensitivity it will stimulate the pain.
Brush your teeth twice a day at least for two minutes with florid toothpaste. Use small and gentle circular movement and avoid harsh brushing to save your gums. Hold the brush in your fingers, not in the palm, to avoid the pressure. Sensitivity is felt to cold water, so use warm water to clean your teeth. Change your brush after two or three months. Avoid grinding teeth. Use anti bacterial mouth wash. Avoid frequent use of sugary, acidic and fizzy foods. Must talk to a dentist is sensitivity is continuous.
