The top 10 trade-in sites that will buy your old gaming consoles

Decluttr

sell old video game consoles

When you get to the Decluttr site, your first instinct will probably be to click on the link above (it says "Sell CDs, DVDs, and Games) — but you'll actually need to click as shown below ("Sell Tech"):

sell old video game consoles

Then, as you'll see, the dropdown menu offers 'Trade in Consoles'. So you'll select that, and a new dropdown menu appears, showing the types of consoles they accept.

Now let's try to sell a console on here. First, I clicked on 'Sell My Xbox and Games' on the menu and got this screen:

sell old video game consoles

So I typed in 'Xbox' and it showed me yet more choices:

sell old video game consoles

So I went with the top choice, "Microsoft Xbox 360 Arcade."

Right away, I see that they expect all parts to be fully functional, and you must send in the original working power supply, i.e. stylus and controllers if applicable, as well as AV cable. No more than light wear and tear will be accepted.

It also shows some additional options on the bottom in case I didn't choose the right console:

sell old video game consoles

But I liked my $22.00 offer, so I added it to my basket and clicked on 'complete order'. Then I had to accept their Terms and Conditions, and read their Selling Rules (which state, in short, you should make sure your item is exactly as you've described to them)..

Then you create your account and go from there! It's a pretty simple site to work with, once you find the right categories.

Here's our handy comparison summary on Decluttr:

Is there a seller's fee? None.

Average payout per console? It varies quite a bit depending on your system and its condition. Here are some examples:

  • A Nintendo 3DS XL will earn you $50 in good condition, $30 in poor condition, and $5 if it's faulty
  • A Sega Dreamcast will get you $5 in good condition
  • Microsoft XBox One with Kinect (500 gb) will get you $86 in good condition

Play around with the tool here to enter your console and see what you can get for it.

Types of consoles accepted: Microsoft, Nintendo, Ouya, Sega, Sony

Any accessories/extra items required with sale? You're expected to include the original working power supply i.e. stylus and controllers if applicable, as well as AV cable.

Free shipping? Yes.

Pros:

  • Easy to navigate website and understand your sale
  • Safe payment platform
  • Lots of items accepted in various conditions

Cons:

  • Typing into the search bar sometimes yields a 'no results' response, but if you click on 'choose your tech from our dropdown list', you'll find what you're looking for right away
  • Some say the best prices may not always be offered on certain items

Bottom line:

This is a safe and respected site on which to sell your tech. You may want to compare the price offered here with other sites to make sure you're getting the best possible price for your item.

GreenBuyBack

sell old video game consoles

If you visit GreenBuyBack, you'll want to click on the bottom left choice to sell your Gaming Console. From here, you'll see the following:

sell old video game consoles

So let's see if we can sell them a Playstation here. Looks like we have a couple of Playstation options they'll accept:

sell old video game consoles

And good news — the Playstation 4 will get us $112 in perfect condition:

sell old video game consoles

Or, it's listed at $100 in good condition. with no other conditions considered in the drop down condition menu. However, they do state that they will purchase it even in poor or broken condition.

We went for the "good" condition, and it looks like we can choose either PayPal or a paper check for our preferred payment method:

sell old video game consoles

Once you fill in the info and place your order, you can print out your free UPS shipping label and mail in your device. Your payment will be sent out within 24 hours of them receiving and verifying your console. Fabulous!

Here's our wrap-up summary on GreenBuyBack:

Is there a seller's fee?  No.

Average payout per console?  Varies considerably based on brand, model, and condition. Try entering your console's info here to find out how much its worth.

Types of consoles accepted: Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo (for others, write them and ask for a custom quote).

Any accessories/extra items required with sale? Not specified, but you should probably include all controllers and cables that came with the original package.

Free shipping? Yes.

Pros:

  • Simple process; easy website navigation
  • Quick turnaround and payment
  • Very responsive customer service

Cons:

  • None found, other than possibly a limited number of consoles accepted (but you can contact them for a custom quote, too)

Bottom line:

This company maintains a 5-star rating on Trustpilot. There's not much you can find about them that isn't positive! May accept fewer console brands than other spots - but do contact them and ask for a custom quote, as they might consider buying yours even if it's not listed on their site

GameStop

sell old video game consoles

We love our local GameStop shops, and now there's even more to love with the trade-in options as well. When trading in a console, click on "Consoles" and enter your device's info to find out if they'll accept it, and how much you'll probably get for it.

When I entered "Nintendo" into the field, I got these choices in a dropdown:

sell old video game consoles

So I decided to click on the top choice and see what was offered:

sell old video game consoles

Looks like I can get the same amount regardless of membership, but these prices are only good for today — for *one* day only. I'd like to sell, so I click on 'Find a Store' to see where I can take my console locally:

sell old video game consoles

Good news is, there appear to be numerous options for me — up to 30 in my area. Stupendous!

So I review the trade instructions on what to do next, including the following:

sell old video game consoles

... And pack up my console for the ride to GameStop. I'll probably call the shop I'm intending to visit to make sure they participate in the trade-ins before I drive over there. Otherwise, it all seems pretty easy peasy and self-explanatory.

Here's our wrap-up on GameStop:

Is there a seller's fee?  No.

Average payout per console?  Varies considerably based on brand, model, and condition. Try entering your console's info in the field here to find out how much you can get for it today.

Types of consoles accepted: Select models of Nintendo, Sega, Xbox, and others. Enter your console's info to see if they're accepting it for trade-in.

Any accessories/extra items required with sale? Yes, you should pack it up with all cords, power chargers, controllers, and related accessories, charge it up if applicable, and delete any sensitive or personal information.

Free shipping? There is no shipping as GameStop takes local products only. The good news? There are GameStops in pretty much every town in the country! Do a search for your nearest location here.

Pros:

  • Simple to understand process
  • GameStops are everywhere, so trade-ins are too (but call before you go to make sure your store participates)
  • Store credit may be available as well as cash back

Cons:

  • Not offered online yet

Bottom line:

I'd probably ask around on the trade-in price in case there are better offers out there. If not, I'd opt for cash instead of store credit when trading in my console. Trustpilot shows a 1-star rating for GameStop (although they do appear to all be related to shopping either online or in person and not trade-ins), an A- on the BBB site (all complaints appear to have been resolved), and 1 star on Reseller Ratings.

Lukie Games

sell old video game consoles

If you're more interested in a site that deals with video games and consoles and nothing else, Lukie Games might work. With this site, you'll email them all the details on your console and include some pictures, and they'll reply with a quote.

Here are some of the consoles for sale on Lukie Games currently:

sell old video game consoles

Here's our summary on Lukie Games:

Is there a seller's fee?  No.

Average payout per console?  Varies considerably based on system and condition.

Types of consoles accepted: Nintendo, Xbox, Sega, Handheld (GameBoys, Nintendo DS, Playstation Vita, etc), Rare and Collectible Systems, and Everything Else:

sell old video game consoles

Any accessories/extra items required with sale? Include whatever you've got in the email description you send them. Take pics too, if you can. The site requests, "If you are trading in a system let us know if it includes original controllers, memory cards, or any other accessories."

Free shipping? Yes, if your trade-in is over $25, they'll provide a shipping label for you free of charge.

Pros:

  • Most customers report quality merchandise and adequate handling of issues when notified
  • Most found their prices to be fair

Cons:

  • They have a 3-star review on Trustpilot, 2.5 stars on Resell Ratings, and an A+ on the BBB site (complaints appear to have been resolved on there). Reviews include some complaints that trade-ins were misplaced or never paid for; some say overnight or otherwise paid shipping upgrades were not honored. Do keep all tracking information and receipts on hand if you mail them your console.

Bottom line:

While most complaints were resolved on the BBB site, other sites still have dissatisfied customer reviews. Retain all receipts and other proof of the value of the product, proof of shipping, etc. if you send your console in. There may be better options out there if you look around locally.

Old School Game Vault

sell old video game consoles

With an A+ rating on the BBB and several 5-star reviews available, we had to highlight Old School Game Vault for your trade-in needs.

They provide a brief, handy video tutorial to show you how to use their page.

sell old video game consoles

The easiest way to find what they're accepting for trade-ins is to type your console into the search field, here in the upper left corner of the website. Otherwise, when you click on one of the options along the right margin of the site (for selling Nintendo, Sega, or other vintage consoles), you'll end up with many, many pages of results to scroll through (which is fine, if that's your thing).

I typed in 'Playstation console', and was given a bunch of options, including these:

sell old video game consoles

To get details, I clicked in on the top choice and it showed me this:

sell old video game consoles

I decided to try to sell this one, and clicked on 'How to sell to us' from the FAQ section on bottom. It said this:

sell old video game consoles

This explains everything pretty well, so I head over to the "sell it" button next to my console.

Here's our summary of the Old School Video Game Vault:

Is there a seller's fee? No.

Average payout per console?  Varies significantly.

Types of consoles accepted: There's a minimum $15 value per order. They accept various types, including Sega, Playstation, Nintendo, Xbox, and more.

Any accessories/extra items required with sale? If you click on the device you're selling, details on what accessories are required will open up. (and, yes, you'll need all the accessories and cords that came with the original package - at least).

Free shipping? Yes, for orders over $100 (orders over $75 get labels too, but they deduct $10 to help cover the cost of shipping).

Pros:

  • Devices kept in good condition will get a fair price
  • Customer service is actually reachable and they promptly return calls and emails
  • Reputable organization

Cons:

  • Payment is available only via PayPal or paper check

Bottom line:

If you can sell your console here, we think you'll be satisfied. Reviews are all stellar and Brandon is reachable at the Illinois location.

SellBroke

When selling an old console on Sellbroke, you'll want to scroll down until you see the "Other" option after 'Search devices, and then click on it to sell your console (bottom right; the picture is a drone):

sell old video game consoles

But don't let that fool you — once you click on it, you'll see it's not only drones, but several choices available:

sell old video game consoles

So let's get into some Gaming Consoles:

sell old video game consoles

Looks like we can work with Microsoft or Sony this time, so we'll go with Sony:

sell old video game consoles

As you can see, there are several models they accept from Sony. Let's stick with the PlayStation 4, and see what it tells us:

sell old video game consoles

So we want a quote on a 'Used, or Good' condition console, so we click the little circle beside that one, and then skip the 'Defects' choices since ours doesn't have any of those defects. We go straight to click on 'Get Quote' then, and it says:

sell old video game consoles

They'll give us $46 for our "Used, Good" condition console, and $55 for "Like New" - if it's defective, they'll give us $17, without a charger and controllers.

Ok, lets go for it. First we need to login or register for an account, then choose our preference of PayPal, Google Wallet, or a paper check for our payment method.

Then we select either FedEx or UPS and they'll send us a shipping label free of charge. Once we get it, we pack up and send our console in. As long as the device is received by SellBroke in the same condition as we described it, we'll receive payment shortly. Kudos!

Now here's our wrap-up summary on the Sellbroke site:

Is there a seller's fee? No.

Average payout per console?  It varies significantly based on model and condition. Try your luck with your console's info here to see what you can get!

Types of consoles accepted: Microsoft and Sony.

Any accessories/extra items required with sale? Must have charger, controllers, etc., (as was included with original packaging) in order to qualify for 'used: good' or 'like new' condition. Otherwise, select from the defects offered for your payout.

Free shipping? Yes.

Pros:

  • Has an A+ rating on the BBB site
  • Free shipping

Cons:

  • Only accepts Microsoft and Sony consoles

Bottom line:

Although they have a high rating on the BBB site, we recommend reading through the reviews on there before you send them anything. If possible, take pictures and confirm with a professional your item's condition before sending, and pack it well with plenty of padding to ensure it reaches them in the same condition it left you in.

BuyBackWorld

When you get to the BuyBackWorld site, you'll notice there's a lot going on:

sell old video game consoles

You'll want to head up to the left hand corner under the little BuyBackWorldearth symbol and click on 'Sell By Category" in grey letters. A dropdown menu will appear, looking like this:

sell old video game consoles

Then scroll down to click on Gaming Console and you'll be able to choose from Atari, Microsoft, Nintendo, SEGA, Sony, and 'Other Brands'...We clicked on 'Other Brands' out of curiosity, and it showed us these:

sell old video game consoles

Now you can look through and find your console. We chose to sell a Sony Playstation 4 Slim 500GB Silver PS4 Limited Edition Console today. Here's what we saw for an offer on 'Excellent' condition:

sell old video game consoles

As you can see, the criteria for each condition is described below the condition choices.

For 'New' condition, we'd get $180, for 'Average', we'd get $135 (with at least one controller included), and for 'Poor/Broken' condition, we'd still get $15.

Superb! We decided to go with 'Excellent' condition, and it asks us to either create an account or check out as a guest. We decided to go with 'Check out as a guest' since we're only selling one item today and likely won't be buying or selling more. So we clicked on that, and it asked our email address. Then it gave us payment options:

sell old video game consoles

We chose an PayPal. Then it asked us our mailing address and gave us a choice on shipping preference:

sell old video game consoles

We picked the free shipping kit since our printer is out of toner right now. Then it asks us to confirm all the information we entered was correct, and hit 'submit' if it is - and voila! The shipping kit will be on its way, and we're just a few days away from getting money from whence there once was none.

Easy! Now let's wrap up with a quick summary:

Here's our wrap-up on BuyBackWorld:

Is there a seller's fee?  No.

Average payout per console? Varies considerably by brand, model and condition. Enter yours here to find out what your payout might be.

Types of consoles accepted: Atari, Microsoft, Nintendo, SEGA, Sony, and 'Other Brands'

Any accessories/extra items required with sale? Looks like you must at least send one controller in as well as the power cable.

Free shipping? Yes.

Pros:

  • You'll get emails every step of the way so you know where your item is in the buyback process
  • If they disagree with your description of the device upon receipt, they'll send it back to you free of charge
  • Although there are complaints noted on the BBB website, they appear to have mostly be resolved within a few days. They currently maintain a 'B' rating on the site.

Cons:

  • Some items appear to have been lost between sender and receiver - with the sender losing out on the promised payout

Bottom line:

The majority of customers appear to be satisfied with this site. If you're sending in a device with an expected high payout, you may want to send it certified or with some other form of tracking since occasionally items have been lost in the mail. Take pics of your device and wrap it in extra padding when sending in to ensure it reaches them in the same condition in which it left you.

uSell

sell old video game consoles

When you get to the uSell site, you'll need to look around on top for the 'sell by category' spot - it's right up there next to "Sell Cell Phone" - see it?

Once you click on that, a new menu opens up and offers you the 'Game Consoles' option:

sell old video game consoles

It asks you which brand you're selling, and it looks like there's only two choices: Nintendo and Sony. We clicked on Nintendo, just because it's first, and got this:

sell old video game consoles

So we clicked on the 'Find Offers' button under the Nintendo DSI Portable, and got this:

sell old video game consoles

For good condition, we'll get $5.39 - but what about if it's in flawless condition? We clicked in to find out, and got this offer:

sell old video game consoles

Not that much more, but ok. We checked out if it's damaged as — you'll get nothing for the trade-in.  Ok, well, we might as well stick with the 'Good' condition, since that describes our console the best. Then we'll choose 'Get Paid':

You can choose PayPal or check as your preferred payment method, and it asks you for your address to send your free shipping label. Sweet!

Now, here's our summary of uSell:

Is there a seller's fee?  No.

Average payout per console? Varies greatly by type and condition. Enter your console's info here to see what you'll get for it.

Types of consoles accepted: Nintendo and Sony

Any accessories/extra items required with sale? Include accessories that came with originally purchased console for gaming.

Free shipping? Yes.

Pros:

  • Simple website to navigate
  • Free shipping

Cons:

  • Some users complained their payment for sold items was not as prompt as they'd expected
  • Some claimed to have had shipping-related issues. i.e. device was sent in good condition, but arrived in poor condition
  • Customer service does not always respond to customers immediately
  • Payouts seemed about average for most items sold; others hit the low end by comparison with other trade-in sites

Bottom line:

Take a picture or two of your item before sending so you're able to verify its condition when sent. Be sure it's properly padded for shipping (i.e. use bubble wrap or similar wrapping). Shop around to make sure you're getting your best payout before agreeing to sale. You might get better offers on consoles elsewhere.

OfferUp

sell old video game consoles

If you prefer to sell your items within your own neighborhood, but you don't feel up to having a physical garage sale, OfferUp may be for you. Known as the 'largest mobile marketplace for local buyers and sellers', it's free to download the app, browse  local items for deals, and check the profiles of potential  buyers/sellers to see how others rated them. Users can exchange messages  in the app to discuss the items for sale. Here's a video explaining the process.

To  sell your console, take a picture of it and post it on the site in less  than a minute. You'll get messages from anyone interested in buying  it.

You'll  need to confirm your identity using their 'TruYou' service. Users aged  13 and up can sell on OfferUp with parental supervision. See additional terms of service here.

Here's our wrap-up on OfferUp:

Is there a seller's fee?  Not for a basic post, but there are ways to "Buy a Bump" and "Promote your Post" and other such enhancements for your ad which do cost money

Average payout per console? Varies with what's available on the site; here are some consoles up for sale today in my area:

sell old video game consoles

Types of consoles accepted: Anything in working condition that someone might want to buy.

Any accessories/extra items required with sale? Nothing  is specifically stated, but you should be sure to describe exactly  what's included with or missing from your console/accessories so that  your ad is not misleading. See how the Wii console seller from above  shares pics of everything included and elaborates on her sale items here:

sell old video game consoles

Free shipping? OfferUp is now offering shipping in order to better compete with eBay. Here's how it works. It's also available on desktop.

Pros:

  • Free to post and create an account
  • Easy to navigate and understand app

Cons:

  • Some complained of scams and fraudulent ads on the site which appeared to remain up even after being flagged for removal
  • Some noted their ads received limited views due to other sellers creating several accounts and posting their ads repeatedly

Bottom line:

Use at your own risk. OfferUp has 3 stars on Trustpilot, an F on the BBB website, and 1.5 stars on SiteJabber.  Be sure you understand exactly how the site works before paying  anything extra for 'featured posts', or for 'bumps' to the top of the  ads, etc. Turn off your notifications when you go to bed to avoid  getting alerts on your items in the middle of the night. As with any  arrangements with strangers, ask to meet in a busy, well-lit public  space like the police station parking lot to exchange money for goods.

Swappa

sell old video game consoles

Swappa likes 'new-ish' items, so if yours is good as new, has all its parts, and looks great, they probably want it. We went in to see what types of consoles are preferred on Swappa:

sell old video game consoles

Here are all the categories you can choose to sell video games under:

sell old video game consoles

sell old video game consoles

Basically, gamers sell directly to each other on Swappa. Here are the basics on how it's done:

sell old video game consoles

So, you don't pay a fee as a seller on Swappa, but some buyers may end up receiving a fee on their purchases. You essentially just create a listing for your console, i.e. describe it, upload some pictures, choose a price (they'll provide some pricing guidance), and voila! You're up and rolling.

They use a PayPal-based system for all transactions, so you can feel good about buying and selling on their site. You'll receive payment before you ship your console, too.

Let's give it a shot!

Ok, first I clicked in to sell a PlayStation 4 Pro and it showed me this:

sell old video game consoles

So I made sure my console is fully functional and read their Terms of Use. Then I created my account and clicked on 'Sell on Swappa'. It showed me this:

sell old video game consoles

So I used the dropdown menus to select my specifics:

sell old video game consoles

Then I scrolled down to choose the condition (I choose 'Good'), then my zip code and location.

When I clicked on Express Shipping, this popped up:

sell old video game consoles

I decided not to allow Express Shipping in case I needed extra time to get the console in the mail. Then my final entries were a headline, description, and images. Then I added photos, and now I wait for approval and then for buyers!

Make sure you conduct yourself with integrity on Swappa, as buyers will rate your product once sold and their interactions with you along the way. You'll want to be like this seller, who has a 5-star rating:

sell old video game consoles

Here's our handy comparison summary on Swappa:

Seller's fee? Buyer pays it.

Average payout per console? It depends on the console and its condition; varies greatly.

Types of consoles accepted: They accept many, see this list.

Any accessories/extra items required with sale? Describe what you have accurately. If you don't have a necessary accessory, be clear about it in your listing.

Free shipping? Shipping costs will be included in the listing price for the item you're selling (you should be able to choose from an approved list of shipping methods).

Pros:

  • You deal with the buyer directly.
  • Large selection of devices available/accepted
  • Sellers pay no fees

Cons:

  • Can only pay through PayPal system
  • Sellers are responsible for the condition of the device until it reaches the buyer
  • You don't get paid until a buyer purchases your item (other sites may purchase from you can resell themselves)

Bottom line:

If you're willing to wait until a buyer purchases your item (if it's in good condition, it probably won't take long), this is for you. Most people have had positive experiences. Be sure to clearly state exactly the condition of the item you are selling in order to avoid negative reviews from buyers.
