How to Replace the Exhaust Manifold on All 1996 - 2000 Honda Civic LX / Del Sol 1.6L 4 Cyl Engines

In this repair guide, you will learn step-by-step the process of removing and installing the exhaust manifold on all 1996 - 2000 Honda Civic LX / del Sol 1.6L 4 cyl engines.

The radio may contain a coded theft protection circuit. Always obtain the code number before disconnecting the battery. If the vehicle is equipped with 4WS, the steering control unit is shut down when the battery is disconnected. After connecting the battery, turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock to reset the steering control unit.

CAUTION: The exhaust system should be serviced with the engine cold.

To remove:

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and support the front of the vehicle and block the rear wheels.
  3. Unbolt the front exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold/catalytic converter. Unbolt the exhaust manifold support brackets if their bolts are accessible from this angle. The splash shield may be removed for better access.
  4. Lower the vehicle. Remove any rust or dirt from the exhaust manifold before removal. This will prevent dirt from entering the exhaust pipes.
  5. Unbolt and remove the manifold heat shield.
  6. Disconnect the Heated Oxygen sensor (HO 2 S) harness. Use an oxygen sensor socket or box end wrench to unscrew the sensor from the manifold. Handle the sensor carefully.
  7. Unbolt the exhaust manifold brackets.
  8. Unbolt the exhaust manifold and separate it from the cylinder head. Remove the exhaust manifold and gasket.

To install:

Use new gaskets and self-locking nuts when installing the exhaust manifold.

  1. Clean the gasket mating surfaces of the manifold and cylinder head ports. Install the new gasket onto the cylinder head. Install new gaskets onto the exhaust pipe flange.
  2. Install the exhaust manifold. Apply anti-seize paste to the studs. Tighten the self-locking nuts to 23 ft. lbs. (32 Nm) in a crisscross pattern starting in the center of the manifold and working outward.
  3. Install the manifold brackets and tighten their bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm) for the B16A2 engines and 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm) for all other engines.
  4. Carefully coat only the threads of the oxygen sensor body with anti-seize paste. Don't get any anti-seize on the sensor probe. Install the HO 2 S and carefully tighten it to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  5. Install the heat shield and tighten the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  6. Reconnect the HO 2 S connector.
  7. Raise and support the front of the vehicle and block the rear wheels.
  8. Reconnect the front exhaust pipe and the exhaust manifold/catalytic converter. Tighten the self-locking nuts to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm), if the converter is not attached to the manifold. If the converter is attached, tighten to 25 ft. lbs., (34 Nm). Install any manifold brackets and tighten them to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm). Install the splash shield if it was removed.
  9. Lower the vehicle and connect the negative battery cable.
  10. Run the engine and check for exhaust leaks.
