1) Research!

One of the first things you have to do is research the company you are working for and learn about their pay scale. It is possible that the company may not be able to offer you the high wages you are seeking. This depends on how much the company earns. Particularly during the recession crisis, they cannot afford to go out of business for your pay raise.

2) Your value to the company!

You need to consider what position you play for the company. During your reviews, don’t force a decision that the employer may end up disliking it. Talk about your accomplishments and what progress you have made since your previous reviews. If you’re a new employee, tell them the story of your previous job including the benefits you brought for the company and the accomplishments you achieved. Talk about each successful approach you had made from overall contribution and productivity. If necessary, tell them your pay rates but don’t broaden the topic. You might have earned bonuses and a higher salary than what you are being offered now. Tell them about the progress you are willing to bring and make the boss discover the potential for having you part of their team.

3) Don’t be greedy!

If the offer given to you is low, accept it like a man. Obviously, you won’t be able to digest this bad news but after they see the good progress you bring to the company, they may consider calling you back for a revision and could increase your pay rates. Don’t act too arrogant or it will cause you to lose the job and you will end up with no payment. It would be a wise decision to accept the low salary at first if they are willing to gift you extra bonuses.

4) Going through the review process!

During your annual reviews, employers will ask you what you have done to benefit the company. Make sure you look at your previous reviews and mention all the major projects you have undertaken, what projects you are working on at present and those you will work on later.

The chance of getting a higher salary is there but you need to demonstrate your skills and make your employer realise that you are a means of the company’s success for the future.
