DIY Decorator Light Switch Covers with Sharpies

If you have ever seen those cute decorator light switch covers and wanted some for your home you don’t need to buy them. They are priced anywhere from $7.99 and up and are really not that hard to make yourself. The cost for a box of plain white light switch covers from Home Depot is a little over $2.00 with tax for a box of 10 single light switch covers or you can simply take down the old covers and decorate them. The only things you need for this project are the box of light switch covers, a pack of Sharpie Markers in assorted colors, and clear gloss finishing spray.

This project is so easy and you can create light switch covers to fit any theme in a room from sports to kitchen to bath. You just need to have an idea of what you want the theme to reflect and soon you will have light switch covers that match your décor. In each package of light switch covers there are two screws. Be careful not to lose these as these are what go into the plate when you are ready to hang it up. On the back of the screws remove the square little washer and you can throw this out. Its only purpose is to keep the screws secured to the plate in the package.

With a 4B pencil draw the image that you want to put on the plate and color in with Sharpie Markers. Once the plate is finished take it outside and spray with clear gloss spray. Be sure you are in a well ventilated area and I cover my plates after they have been sprayed with a dome shaped colander to keep dust and other foreign matter from landing on the plate while it is drying. Once it’s dry you are ready to replace the old cover. Taking a flat head screw driver remove both screws and if the plates have been stuck to the wall for a long time you may need to gently pry it away from the wall.

Be careful not to pry too far in or you may accidentally hit some wires and knock something loose. Once the old cover is off replace it with the new decorator cover. I personally paint the screw tops so that they match the plate. In other words if the screw sits in a blue background on the switch light cover I paint the screw top blue so that it blends in. There’s really nothing to it and there are so many ways you can add to the décor of a room with simple touches such as this.
