Buying a new mattress is one of the most time-consuming purchases out there, aside from buying a home. The average person will use their mattress for at least 10 years, so it's important to make the best decision for your body (and wallet).
Meet Avocado Green Mattress, an eco-friendly mattress made from organic and natural materials. Company founders started the brand after their own failed mattress search in 2016: they wanted a green mattress, but the few options on the market were too expensive and filled with bogus, greenwashing claims. Instead of buying one of these mattresses, Jeff and Alexandra D’Andrea started their own company to upset the mattress industry and create a product that's truly good for your health and the environment.
I gave the Avocado Green Mattress a two-week sleep test and, basically, it's amazing. My previous 15-year-old spring mattress held its head in shame the second my Avocado Green Mattress box came through the door and will never be coming back. This mattress is firm, yet plushy; incredibly comfortable; and has improved my quality of sleep tremendously since receiving it. Essentially, we're best friends now and no one could get in between us.
Avocado Green Mattress was kind enough to send us the original mattress for review, but all opinions of the product are my own and the information is from my own research.

Avocado Green Mattress Order & Delivery
The ordering process was very smooth for my mattress. Avocado Green Mattress only has two mattresses to choose from, a wool or vegan mattress, and each has the optional pillow-top for an additional two inches for added pressure relief.
The Avocado Green Mattress comes in two material varieties, wool and vegan-friendly cotton. Personally, I chose the wool mattress, but it doesn't seem like there is a major difference between the two other than the materials. Avocado also offers an add-on pillow-top for an extra $240-500 depending on the size of the mattress, but I personally got no pillow-top.
Shipping an Avocado Green Mattress is pretty quick compared to other brands. Since these mattresses are handmade in sunny California, I expected for it to take more than a couple days to receive my order. I received a shipping notification ahead of schedule, as the mattress shipped one week after ordering when it could have taken up to two weeks. I got my mattress delivered with White Glove delivery exactly two weeks after ordering, which is half the shipping time of other bed-in-a-box brands (Purple has a fulfillment time of up to four weeks!).
My white glove delivery was so quick – I went into the other room to grab a pen to sign the delivery slip and when I came back in I had a new bed (pardon my mess of cords)!
I would recommend getting the White Glove delivery (an extra $199) if you don't have someone to help you move the box – the mattress starts at 59lbs and goes up to 122lbs for a California King.
Unfortunately, not everyone has had a pleasant delivery experience, as Avocado uses a third-party shipping company. Kimberly from Get Green Be Well said the following happened in her free delivery:
“As was expected, the delivery guy would not bring my 80-lb. bed up the stairs to my second floor condo. He literally looked at all 5 foot 3 inches of me and said “It’s too hard” to bring the mattress upstairs. Then he told me (I’m not even making this up…………) that it looked like it was going to rain soon and that I should figure out how to get the bed inside the house soon.”
She did recommend choosing the White Glove service if you need help with your mattress, as Avocado has no control over the helpfulness of the people unless you pay for that service.
Update: After using the mattress for 20+ days, I read on the website it's not supposed to be on my old box spring because the Avocado mattress is a hybrid – which means it combines latex cushioning with an internal innerspring support. A box spring will make the mattress too bouncy and lose a lot of edge support. I'm going to try and take my mattress off of the box spring to see how this makes a difference. At this point, I'd be scoring the mattress at an A++ instead of an A+ if it got any better.
Avocado Green Mattress First Impressions
When I first sat on the mattress I was a little surprised by how firm it was! My sad, old mattress (I feel bad bashing it so much?) was sagging in all the wrong places, so I almost forgot what a new mattress feels like. After sitting, laying down, and sprawling out, my first thought was, “Someone has to tell my boss I won't be coming into work tomorrow.” It was THAT comfortable.
Also the Avocado mattress is thick – see here a comparison with my box spring, which is about the thickness of my old mattress. The mattress is 11-inches thick, which translates 100% to comfort and support. First impressions are important (we've all watched The Bachelor) and the Avocado mattress was a pleasant surprise.
First, the cover of the mattress doesn't look like your average mattress. It's covered in hand-crafted tufts made from organic cotton, which secure the mattress layers firmly in place using small rosettes in the tufts made from wool. These rosettes replace the need of chemical adhesives and connect to small anchors on the bottom of the mattress. Fun fact: not using the chemical adhesives actually makes the mattress more durable and prevents bumps from appearing over time.
The color of the mattress is more of a cream color than pure white, which should help prevent staining, and has green and gray-colored handles to help you move the mattress as needed.
Avocado Green Mattress Materials
The Avocado Green Mattress is GREENGUARD Gold Certified by UL Environment, which means they’re scientifically tested to meet some of the world’s most rigorous emissions standards for chemical exposure and pollutants, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde and phthalates. It's made with natural and organic materials, like eco-INSTITUT certified, 100% natural Dunlop latex from tree-tapped and sustainable sources; GOTS organic and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified wool; and GOTS organic certified cotton.
Natural Latex Rubber
The sustainable, latex rubber is eco-friendly, high-performing, resilient, durable, and temperature controlling. The Dunlop latex is made from a simple, energy-efficient process in comparison to the similar Talalay latex, which requires more processing and chemical additives. The Dunlop latex makes for both a healthier and more eco-friendly mattress.
Organic Certified Wool
Wool can wick moisture, stay fresh, and acts as a natural fire barrier – what other cozy material can say that? Plus it's also anti-microbial, resistant to dust mites, and offers natural temperature control. The Natural JOMA New Zealand wool is a great material, but it was an issue for the brand's vegan customers. The new Avocado Vegan Mattress is made with 100% organic cotton batting and still meets all federal flammability standards.
Organic Certified Cotton
The mattress cover of your Avocado Green Mattress is made with premium, certified organic cotton, which is one of the softest, most breathable, and most comfortable fabrics you can get. Cotton helps you sleep cool, wick moisture, and has the Global Organic Textile Standard certification.
The remainder of the mattress is made from an 8-inch support unit made from 756 - 1,414 individually-tuned support coils for spinal alignment and balance. Here's what Avocado has to say about their coils:
“This premium, highly durable system allows for optimal and individualized ergonomic and joint support, while at the same time, better contouring to your body shape and evenly distributing weight. Better still, the reinforced perimeter provides critical edge support to eliminate the "roll-off" feeling near the edge.”
Avocado Green Mattress's inner coils earned it the #1 spot on Consumer Reports's Mattress Ratings list from November 2018.
Avocado Green Mattress Off-gassing
I haven't had a new mattress in over 15 years, so I'm not sure how much off-gassing is normal or acceptable, but Avocado's seemed minimal. For those that don't know, off-gassing occurs when volatile organic compounds leak out of mattress foams into the air. Mattresses made with petroleum-based polyurethane, chemical adhesives, and chemical fire retardants off-gas those chemicals into the air we breathe. The result: a stinky mattress and chemicals in your body.
The Avocado Green Mattress doesn't have these chemicals, so it doesn't off-gas, but I did notice an earthy odor from the mattress when I laid on it. The smell went away within an hour or two of leaving the mattress uncovered with the window open.
While my off-gassing experience was pretty good, other shoppers have had allergy issues with the natural materials. Kimberly from Get Green Be Well experienced severe allergies from her Avocado mattress. She said the following:
“The problem was, even though it was natural materials off gassing, for some reason they really affected me. Like migraine within 30 minutes, throat swelling and itchy and eyes puffy and swollen.”
Unfortunately, this caused her to return her mattress, but the Avocado customer service team was excellent and actually told her that if she could find a way to donate the mattress, they would take care of it for her as an eco-friendly company. I really appreciated this, as otherwise the mattress would have gone to landfill. Additionally, the excellent customer service is commendable.
Avocado Green Mattress Comfort Level
The Avocado Green Mattress is definitely a firm mattress. The brand describes it as a “gentle, yet firm feel,” but I think that's a little misleading. I would reverse it as a firm, yet gentle feel. The additional pillow-top might add some squish to the mattress, but don't purchase this mattress thinking it'll be soft.
I've never slept on a firm mattress for an extended period of time, really just hotel room stays (which I wouldn't consider quality sleep). I had a lower back dance injury about six years ago and strenuous exercise (aka my 5x per week boxing classes) really puts a strain on my injury. Often about two-thirds of the way through a work day I move to our office couch to rest my back from sitting upright all day. Ever since I started sleeping on this mattress, I no longer have to do that. I only do it now because I love the couch.
Mattress review website, Tuck, explained how this works:
“The low-ILD latex used in the comfort layer of the Avocado mattress offers fairly close conforming, which some owners say helps alleviate pain and pressure in sensitive areas of their bodies.”
The Avocado Green Mattress also has three different firmness comfort zones from its ergonomic support coils that are designed to provide the best support to the areas that need it most. The pelvic and shoulder areas are softer because your body sinks in more easily there and firmer in the middle to provide optimal back support.
While I think the Avocado Green Mattress is the most comfortable thing I can sleep on besides an actual cloud, I also consulted other review websites to see how they rated the comfort level of the mattress. Consumer Reports rated the mattress as the following for each body type:
- Petite side sleeper: Very Good
- Average side sleeper: Excellent
- Large/Tall side sleeper: Excellent
- Petite back sleeper: Excellent
- Average back sleeper: Excellent
- Large/Tall back sleeper: Excellent
Avocado Green Mattress Cooling Features
The Avocado mattress is made from organic wool, which would make it sound like it won't keep you cool in your sleep. It's actually the contrary, as people wear wool to keep cool in hot desert areas. Wool is known for its superior insulation properties, but that isn't just for warmth. It's a great temperature moderator and is extremely durable due to its texture.
In fact, Our Sleep Guide included the Avocado Green Mattress in its Best Mattresses for Hot Sleepers guide and reported the mattress' organic cotton cover and plush wool batting “provides another layer of comfort as well as a naturally moisture wicking and breathable cover.”
Additionally, the breathable latex adds to the coolness of the mattress. Sleep Cupid's review of the green mattress reported the following:
“Standard foam on traditional memory foam mattresses tends to build up heat, but this isn’t really the case with the Avocado Green. Because it is made of breathable latex, air can travel through the layers a bit more freely, and you get less of that insulating effect. The natural firmness of the latex also tends to let you float above the mattress, rather than sinking into it, which also helps to keep you cooler. The cover of the bed, which is the part that you will have the most direct contact with, is also naturally breathable, so it will help you stay cooler than other artificial materials. The organic cotton underneath the wool also helps to wick moisture. The nice thing about the Avocado Green is the fact that all of its cooling mechanisms are natural and come from organic sources. They are a consequence of design, instead of artificial cooling chemicals. There’s nothing necessarily wrong with cooling gels, but if you’re looking for something 100% natural, the Avocado Green manages to produce a similar effect without the laboratory treatment.”
I am a very warm sleeper, the idea of wearing sweatpants to bed is a foreign concept to me. While I didn't notice myself getting warm in the middle of the night, it's currently winter and I tend not to get as warm in winter. I'll have to see in the spring and summer if I notice a difference in my sleeping temperature.
Avocado Green Motion Isolation
I don't currently sleep in my bed with anyone (#sad), so I can't really test the motion isolation of the mattress. Luckily, a lot of publications have reviewed how much the Avocado Green Mattress eases movement.
Sleep Judge reviewed the motion isolation of the mattress and gave a positive review:
“Using two 20 pound medicine balls, I tested this product to see just how well it performs. I placed one ball on one third of the mattress and dropped the other on the opposite third. To my surprise, there was minimal movement of the resting ball when the other all made contact with the mattress surface. Furthermore, the ball I dropped only bounced a few times before coming to rest.”
Additionally, Tuck.com gave the mattress a rating of Good (with Very Good and Excellent being higher) and said, “
Being a very firm hybrid (almost an innerspring), the Avocado will transfer motion more than all foam and other mattress builds.”
Overall, memory foam mattresses perform better over latex mattresses of isolating motion, so the Avocado Green Mattress is a good option, but if you and your partner have a lot of trouble sleeping, you might want to look at a memory foam mattress.
Avocado Mattress Sex Compatibility
Unfortunately for you readers, I haven't tested out the sex compatibility of my Avocado Green Mattress (see above for my current sleeping situation), but many major publications have.
Tuck reviewed the Avocado Green Mattress for sex as Fair (with Good, Very Good, and Excellent ranked higher). Tuck explained, “The soft latex surface of an Avocado Green mattress may not be responsive or bouncy enough for some couples, despite the thick pocketed coil layer.”
However, Sleep Cupid also reviewed the sex compatibility of the mattress and gave it a glowing review:
“Because latex is naturally bouncy, you will never feel like you’re trapped in the bedding material, and you will easily be able to move around during nighttime fun with your partner. The bed is responsive and, thanks to coils, it offers the springiness of a traditional mattress, but without any of the noise or instability... When it comes to edge support, you also don’t have to worry about sliding off the side of the bed in the heat of the moment. Unlike a lot of other foam beds—even other latex ones—the Avocado Green has good edge support. The coils at the base really help to create a stable bed, and even if you lean into the edge, you’re unlikely to find yourself rolling off.”
Additionally, Sleep Advisor also gave the mattress a positive review for sex saying, “The coils in the bed have been designed to go clear to the edge, and there is good edge support on the bed, which can mean more positions. The combination of the coils and aerated latex create good airflow, which can help keep the surface of the bed cool as things heat up.”
Thankfully, Avocado Green Mattress offers a 100-day sleep trial for you to test out the mattress all that you need to before completely committing to the bed.
Avocado Green Mattress Eco-Friendliness
The Avocado Green Mattress is Knoji's #1 choice for eco-friendly mattresses, and it's no surprise why. All of Avocado's mattresses, toppers, and pillows are GREENGUARD Gold Certified by UL Environment, which means “they're scientifically tested to meet some of the world’s most rigorous emissions standards for chemical exposure and pollutants, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde and phthalates."
The brand also sources their materials from sustainable sources, saying, “An Avocado Green Mattress is made with only finest natural and organic materials, including 100% natural Dunlop latex from tree-tapped and sustainable sources. Our organic mattresses are free of polyurethane foams and off-gassing memory foams. Also, there are no chemical flame retardants to endanger your health."
Avocado Green Mattress is not only just a popular choice with review sites, it's often the #1 ranked choice for eco-friendly mattresses on review sites like Slumber Search, Tuck, Sleep Cupid and more.
Avocado Green Mattress Durability
Multiple publications have taken the Avocado Green Mattress through the wringer when it comes to durability testing and, guess what, it passed with flying colors.
Consumer Reports gave the mattress an Excellent review (the highest possible) when it comes to durability. Similarly, Tuck gave the mattress a Very Good (Excellent is one higher) for durability and said, “Latex is highly durable. Because the Avocado Green substitutes polyfoam with latex in the comfort layer, the mattress has a longer-than-average projected lifespan especially coupled with very low gauge (firm) coils in the support core.”
Basically, your mattress should last you a while. The Avocado Green Mattress comes with a 10-year full-coverage warranty and a 25-year limited-coverage warranty to cover manufacturer defects or defects in workmanship.
Avocado Green Mattress Customer Reviews
The Avocado Green Mattress has over 6000 (!) 5-star reviews on the website. Here are some reviews shoppers found the most helpful:
“Krista: It's been almost a month and we are extremely happy with our Avocado so far! We purchased the standard matress without the pillow top and it's the perfect level of firmness for my hubby and I which has proven to be a tough task until now. We tried out two other mattresses from a similar green online matress company and unfortunately both of them had to be returned due to sagging after less than 6 weeks. Instead of trying out another memory foam hybrid matress we went with the Avocado based on it's organic cotton, Jorma Wool, latex, and recycled coils. Through research I found memory foam tends to sag within 3 years and latex is far more resilient.
The Avocado has a fabulous feel of being firm which is great on our backs after surfing, yoga, or mountain biking yet it is soft enough to support our spines when we are on our sides. We also found it had no off gassing whatsoever!
In addition to the extreme quality of the mattress their customer service has been fantastic. Our pillow didn't make it and they sent us out two ASAP! A week later Fed Ex delivered our first pillow with a note that they had delivered it to the wrong address so it wasn't even Avocado's fault. If they were public I'd buy stock, that is how great our experience has been with Avocado so far. I'm hoping to feel the same as the years roll on!”
Sharon: “I was reticent to buy sight unseen. Okies are born having said that I did literally hundreds of hours researching beds and going to mattress companies locally to test beds. At the end of the day my gut instinct kept me going back to Avocado. We are so happy we made this decision. We have slep on this well designed bed like a King and Queen. There are absolutely zero off gassing odors and the construction is beyond belief. The customer service is impeccable and believe me I pinged in Jay and Mark to the point it might have been stalking LOL but they answered each and every question I had in such a timely manner I thought they must have just been sitting by their computers waiting for my next question. I am an ordinary consumer who likes extraordinary products and this mattress is one of those products. If you are thinking about a new mattress di not hesitate to put Avocado Green Mattress to the top of your list.”
Heather: “Recently I was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease and arthritis in my neck. I'm a stomach sleeper and in order to not make things worse I needed to learn to sleep on my side. Well, my old mattress caused me all kinds of aches and pains. At the recommendation of my chiropractor I started looking and looking and looking for a new bed. I wanted the most non-toxic bed I could get for my money ($1400-$1600). I was skeptical purchasing a bed over the internet but all my research kept leading me to the Avocado. And, I have to say from the first night I slept in this bed I've had some of the best nights sleep I've had in years! I can't recommend it enough!”
Avocado Green Mattress Pillows
I was also lucky enough to receive two Avocado Green pillows, and let me tell you, these bad boys are awesome. This was another scenario of me owning pillows that Bed Bath and Beyond would look at and say, “We used to sell these?” They needed to be replaced (see them compared to my old, flat pillows).
These pillows are extremely plushy and are described as the following:
“Our non toxic pillow is made from natural latex and GOTS organic certified Kapok fill, wrapped in a GOTS organic certified cotton cover, and delivers a fresh, medium-plush feel. It's also Greenguard Gold certified, vegan and handmade in Los Angeles.”
These pillows have a 4.7/5 star rating out of 1,455 reviews on the Avocado website and here's what some shoppers (or should I say, sleepers) had to say:
Jane: “I think I've purchased over 20 pillows in the last two years and none of them have given me enough support to allow for a restful nights sleep. I have a degenerative disc in my neck and also tight painful muscles from a car accident. Usually, I'm awake a number of times at night readjusting my pillows to try and get comfortable. With my Advacado pillow I give it a good fluffing up at bedtime, then I rest my head down on the pillow and that's it for the night, until I wake up in the morning. For me it's a damn miracle pillow and worth every penny. It's not hot to sleep on either. Bloody fantastic it is. Thank you Advacado.”
Jay: “I've bought so many pillows even more expensive than this one and they have not lived up to the price or comfort. This is a great pillow. Does the job and I can rest comfy knowing I'm not breathing any harmful chemicals every night. Get it !”
Robin: “I chose to receive two free pillows with my queen mattress purchase, even though I had a pillow I really liked. Now my old pillow sadly weeps as it is nightly pushed to the side and I curl up with my Avocado pillows. These pillows are firm but not hard, and they don't overheat my head. Thanks for the free pillows, Avocado!”
Avocado Green Mattress Pricing & Comparison

Compared to other online mattress brands, Avocado Green Mattress is on the expensive side. On our mattress comparison guide, Avocado ranked at 4/5 dollar signs, while brands like Casper and Purple ranked a lot lower (1/5 and 3/5, respectively). However, the materials and sustainability factor of this mattress is what leads to a higher cost. Quality mattresses can range from $800 to $3000 for a queen size, so for traditional mattress brands, the pricing is average.

Final Thoughts On My Avocado Green Mattress
My bedroom is currently my little sanctuary (despite my off-center decor) and my Avocado Green Mattress is a positive addition to my bedroom. I pride myself on trying to be as eco-friendly as possible – a lot of my decor is second-hand or purchased from local businesses – and I feel proud knowing my mattress is also sustainable.
In addition to my plush Avocado Green Mattress and Pillows, I like to keep my bedding as cozy as possible. My duvet cover is an organic cotton set from Wayfair and my bamboo sheet set is from Zenlusso (Side note: I absolutely love these sheets. They're 100% Bamboo Viscose, Oeko-Tex Certified, hypoallergenic, soft and breathable, and responsibly made. They're inexpensive and work great with my curly hair, which all curly girls know is a big deal).
From this review you can tell I enjoy my mattress, but here's the final pro's and con's list according to both mine and people's thoughts on the mattress:
- White glove delivery
- Vegan-friendly option
- Doesn't off-gas
- No chemical sealants makes the mattress more durable
- Highest eco-friendly certifications
- Three different firmness zones for optimal support
- Wool material has natural cooling features
- Made with natural and organic materials
- Decent motion isolation
- Decent sex compatibility
- Heavy so it's hard to move yourself
- More firm than advertised
- Only average motion isolation
- Only average sex compatibility
- Higher priced than competitors
- Natural odor might cause allergies for some
Overall, if the Avocado Green Mattress is in your price range, I think it's worth the investment. You spend 8 hours per night sleeping, so it's important to choose a mattress that's good for your health. If caring for the environment is also important to you, Avocado has the best green and vegan mattresses on the market. Essentially, this mattress is both better for you and the planet.
