Appliances are a definite necessity in your home. Although you may be able to function without a washer or dryer, there are two major appliances that you cannot do without and those are a stove and refrigerator. Most of us are familiar with the vinyl coatings. However, stainless steel appliances are becoming popular. The dilemma is to choose between vinyl coated, or stainless steel finished appliances.

This article is not to compare brands,or prices but to provide information so the consumer can compare the differences and advantages of stainless steel, brushed stainless steel refrigerators as to those that are vinyl coated.

Vinyl Coated

Although the consumer continues to purchase the vinyl coated refrigerator, there are disadvantages with them that do not occur with the stainless steel refrigerator.

  • The vinyl, over the course of time may turn yellow due to the sun or faulty materials.
  • Chipping often occurs. Once the chips appear, rust does occur in those areas. There are ways to repair those areas. However, often the refrigerator will no longer have that new look to it. At least the repair may protect the metal that is exposed due to the chipping of the vinyl.
  • Shelving is usually coated with vinyl which is subject to chipping and rusting. However, shelving for the refrigerator and freeze can be ordered from the manufacturer but this can be an expensive venture. The cost averages between $30-60 (per shelf) and above depending on the size of the shelf, and materials used.
