Applebee’s Restaurant
It was Bill and T.J. Palmer who started the Applebee’s restaurant with their first restaurant, T.J. Applebee’s Rx for Edibles & Elixirs, in Decatur, Georgia in the year 1980. In the same year after opening the second restaurant, the chain was sold to W. R. Grace and Company. The sale was in the year1983. Bill Palmer was named president of the Applebee's Division and he developed the company into a franchise system. Later in the year1986 the chain changed its name to Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar. This was to reflect the importance of the place where the restaurant operates. In 1988 Abe Gustin and John Hamra purchased the Applebee’s concept and Applebee's International, Inc. was formed to run the franchise business.
Applebee’s Taken Over by IHOP Corp
Applebee’s was taken over by IHOP Corp. in the year 2007. IHOP franchises all its restaurants and they introduced the system to Applebee’s also. IHOP chairman Julia Stewart said “We believe we have an opportunity to re-energize the brand and get franchisees, employees and guests all sort of thinking about the brand in a different way.” As part of the new marketing strategy, Applebee’s hired Wanda Sykes to voice the chain's new mascot, the Applebee's Apple. Applebee’s slogan is "Together is good" and "Get it together, baby!" It is voiced by Wanda Sykes as the voice of the mascot the Applebee’s Apple. In February 2008 there came the slogan “It’s a whole new neighborhood”. The new commercial is without the Applebee’s apple character.
