8 Current NHL Coaches Have Won One Stanley Cup

Out of the thirty teams in the National Hockey League, eight of the current head coaches have won one Stanley Cup. Three or four of them are in serious contention to win their second this year. Five of the eight head coaches are still with the team that they won their Stanley Cup with.

Mike Babcock is the head coach of the Detroit Red Wings. Babcock’s Wings won the Stanley Cup with a victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2008. Mike began his head coaching career with the Anaheim Ducks in 2002-03 and immediately guided the team to the Stanley Cup finals before losing to the New Jersey Devils. He was coach in Anaheim for one more season. Babcock has been coach of the Red Wings since the 2005-06 season. He reached the finals in 2008-09 before losing to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Dan Bylsma is the head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins. 2008-09 was Dan’s first season as a head coach in the NHL. He led the Penguins to Stanley Cup victory in that first season. Bylsma has been with Pittsburgh since.

Randy Carlyle is the head coach of the Anaheim Ducks. The Ducks won the Stanley Cup in 2007 over the Ottawa Senators with Randy behind the bench. Carlyle has been coaching Anaheim since the 2005-06 season.

Marc Crawford won a Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche in 1995-96, his second season coaching and the franchise’s first season in Denver after moving from Quebec City. Crawford began coaching in 1994-95 with the Quebec Nordiques. He coached with Colorado until the end of the 1997-98 season. He spent eight years as head coach of the Vancouver Canucks from 1998-99 to 2005-06. Crawford had a short stay in Los Angeles as coach of the Kings for the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons. He began coaching the Dallas Stars this past season and is still currently there.

Peter Laviolette won the Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006 with a victory over the Edmonton Oilers. Peter has coached since 2001-02 with the New York Islanders, Carolina and the Philadelphia Flyers. This past season, the Flyers made it to the Stanley Cup finals before losing to the Chicago Blackhawks.

Jacques Lemaire won the Stanley Cup back in 1994-95 with the New Jersey Devils by beating the Detroit Red Wings. Jacques began coaching in 1983 with the Montreal Canadiens. He spent five years coaching the Devils before moving to the Minnesota Wild for nine seasons from 2000-01 to 2008-09. Lemaire has just recently returned to be bench boss of the Devils.

Joel Quenneville won the Stanley Cup this past season, 2009-10, with the Chicago Blackhawks. Joel has coached in the NHL since the 1996-97 season with the St. Louis Blues, Colorado Avalanche and Chicago.

John Tortorella is the current head coach of the New York Rangers, a position he’s held since the 2008-09 season. John won the Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2004 with a victory over the Calgary Flames. He was with the Lightning from 2000-01 to 2007-08.
