The month of August in 2011 is now the rainiest or wettest month in New York City history with 18.95" of rain in Central Park. On the 14th of August alone, we got 5.81" of rain, which is the fifth rainiest day in New York City history dating back to 1869. Then Hurrican Irene hit in late August and the rainfall from Irene pushed the total precipitation for the month to a new all-time record.

So far in August of 2011, we have received 11.59 inches of rain through the 24th. It rained on the 25th, probably enough to push the overall total over the 12" mark. If Hurricane Irene dumps 5" or more of rain over the next few days, New York City will experience its rainiest month in history dating back to 1869. Update: Hurrican Irene dumped well over 7" of rain in the New York area over two days, which helped break the all-time record for the rainiest month in NYC.
