The Sighthound Dog Group
EducationThe Sighthound Dog Group
Sighthounds are also called gazehounds. Unlike scent hounds who hunt using endurance and smell, they hunt with speed and sight. Sighthounds are capable of reaching high speeds for short lengths of time, thus they run down their prey. Depending on the Sighthound, they hunt everything from rabbits, deer, gazelle and wolves.
Sighthounds are tall slender dogs, with a deep chest, long legs and a flexible back. They are quick of sight, able to detect the slightest movement and are very agile and fast. Unlike most dogs, sight hounds have a long lean head. This head type is called dolichocephalism and is commonly seen in wild dogs such as wolves in coyotes. Most domesticated dogs who a shorter head type called Brachcephalic. Scientists believe that the shortening of the dogs head has resulted in a decrease in the dog’s vision.
Sighthounds are some of the oldest dog breeds on Earth. Their ancestors have been traced back to around 6000 BC. They are a very primal group of dogs, still full of instincts and drive. Today, they are most often seen as beloved family pets but they still excel at hunting and coursing. Sighthounds are the group of dogs used for dog racing.
As a group, Sighthounds tend to be rather nervous and high strung. Most are aloof, even suspicious with strangers. They are affectionate with their own family, however many tend to bond more closely with one particular person. They are best suited for those with experience, as they tend to be difficult to train. They need a solid pack leader who is calm and not given to yelling or emotional outbursts. Sighthounds are sensitive dogs and do not take well to stress.
Greyhounds
As a group, they are healthy dogs, not given to piles of health issues. However, they are very sensitive to drugs and should never be given medications unnecessarily. Even flea repellents should be avoided. It is best to use herbal products. Many do not take well to cold weather and will need protection during the winter.
They are an active group but their exercise needs are not as much as many would think. The biggest thing a scent hound needs is some regular time to run off lead. Due to their hunting heritage, they are prey driven and will chase and kill anything they see as game. They should only be allowed off lead in a safely enclosed area. They also make excellent jogging or bicycling companions and enjoy lure coursing.
They are best for calm homes that do not have a lot of turmoil or uproar. Most are a little too sensitive to live in a household with small children. They are usually good with other dogs but most are not trustworthy with small animals, even cats.
Greyhound
The Sighthound group is one of the smaller dog classes. Some Sighthounds are: The Greyhound, Irish Wolfhound, Deerhound, Whippet, Afghan Hound, Saluki, Borzoi and the Pharaoh Hound.
The Sighthound group is a beautiful group of dogs. However, they are not a group for everyone. Those looking for an outgoing sociable family dog should look elsewhere. They make a great friend for an adult single or couple who enjoys some outdoor activity. They are a gentle sweet natured group of dogs who need an owner with a similar temperament.
