Cake Decoration: How to Make a Swimming Pool Kid's Birthday Cake
EducationCake Decoration: How to Make a Swimming Pool Kid's Birthday Cake
The perfect birthday cake for a pool party is a swimming pool cake, it is quite simple to make and can be made at home together with the birthday girl or boy. The actual baking stage of this birthday cake preparation is very simple as all you need is a standard round cake. You can make it a large round cake or a small round cake but it does need to be relatively high.
What you will need to make and decorate a swimming pool kid's birthday cake:
1 Round plain cake (it can be any flavor)
Finger biscuits
Frosting/icing (made out of 250ml whipping cream, 1 packet vanilla pudding powder, 1 cup of milk) You could actually use any frosting but this is the one I use.
Blue and white cake sprinkles (alternatively you can use blue jello)
Candy for decorating – liqurish, round bubble gums,
Cocktail umbrellas
"People" – you can use either small dolls or dolls made out of sugar and candy which you can buy.

How to decorate a swimming pool cake:
Take your cooled round cake and ice it on all sides including the top of the birthday cake.
Using the finger biscuits create an outer wall of the pool by "sticking" the biscuits to the frosting.
Sprinkle the white and blue sprinkles on the top of the cake as the pool "water". Another way of creating the "water" is by making blue jello in a separate bowl and then crumbing the jello into the cake surface. If you decide to use jello there is no need to ice the top part of the cake.
Now comes the fun part – decorating the cake with candy and "pool" accessories! Some of the useful candies are round bubble gums, candy snakes, toffees (which can be shaped into other objects), and fish shaped candy. If you browse through the candy section of any candy store you will get lots of ideas of how to use the candy to decorate the swimming pool cake. If you are unsure then just buy lots of different shapes and colors of candy and put it all together at home. You can always eat the leftover candy while decorating the swimming pool cake!
Apart from candy you can decorate the swimming pool birthday cake with small toys and non-edible accessories but be sure to remove them before serving the birthday cake. You can use cocktail umbrellas and small dolls. If you can't make the swimming pool accessories stand up properly then you can use toothpicks but once again be careful to remove them before serving!
