Vegan Product Review: Amy's Roasted Vegetable Pizza (No Cheese)

Updated December 8, 2012
2 minute read

Most people think frozen pizzas are low in flavor (and high in sodium and fat). Most people who don't have diet restrictions can pick up any of dozens of pizzas, from supreme to extra cheese, without batting an eye. However, are there any good frozen pizzas for vegans? Sure, there are some soy cheese pizzas, and some are tasteless while others are decent. This pizza is rich in flavor and without any artificial cheese. There is no cheese at all. I have loved Amy's Roasted Vegetable Pizza for many years.

Appearance and Price

Amy's vegan frozen pizza is delicious, but it's pricey. I paid nearly $7.00 for a frozen pizza that provides three servings, but it is made with organic shiitake mushrooms and is dairy free and cholesterol free.

The frozen pizza can be found in many grocery stores, but not all. It comes in a square box with mostly earthy colors. At the top it states, "Made with organic shiitake mushrooms, sweet onions and roasted red peppers." Below that it says, "Amy's Roasted Vegetable Pizza No Cheese." Over half the bottom of the box is a delicious looking pizza with a golden crust, a brown sauce, and red peppers and artichokes as toppings.

The pizza looks very similar after I bake it in my own oven, so they are not likely air brushing or touching up the photo: that is the real thing. What you see on the box is what you get.

Flavor

After baking in the oven for just over ten minutes, the pizza smells delicious. I can barely wait the few minutes it needs to sit to cool. The crust is crispy on the outside yet soft and fluffy on the inside. It tastes buttery and flavorful, seasoned with herbs and spices.

The center of the pizza is delicate yet hearty. The sauce is a sweet mushroom onion mix that is slathered on, and the marinated artichokes and roasted red peppers lend a delicious flavor mixture. I don't think they could add anything to make this pizza taste better. This combination is perfect on a delicious crust. It's hard to believe this pizza was frozen.

Nutritional Information

Like most pizzas, Amy's Roasted Vegetable Pizza with No Cheese is a bit high in fat and sodium. One serving, which amounts to one third of the pizza, contains 280 calories (80 from fat), total fat of 9 grams (with only 1.5 grams of saturated fat, or 8% RDA and no trans fat), no cholesterol, 540 mg of sodium (a whopping 23% RDA for sodium, very comparable to other frozen pizzas, however), 3 grams of fiber (12% RDA), 5 grams of sugar, and 7 grams of protein.

There are trace amounts of vitamins in this pizza: 2% RDA of vitamin A and calcium, 4% RDA of iron, and 15% RDA of vitamin C. This pizza contains no bioengineered ingredients, no GMOs (genetically modified organisms), and no preservatives. The ingredients are proudly displayed in large capital font near the middle of the back of the box, not hidden in small text on the flap or the side of the package.

Obviously, due to the price and high sodium content, this is not something you'd want to eat everyday for dinner, but this frozen pizza is a delicious treat for vegans or anyone watching their diet. Pair it with a salad for a nutritious lunch or dinner. This is one of my favorite frozen pizzas!
