While both of the above posts are helpful, they do not mention that this is a topic of ongoing debate and research for psychologists. Classifications of what is an emotion continues to change, with most experts leaning toward classifying something as an emotion only if it is universal across cultures and races.

There are six primary emotions, and dozens of secondary emotions. They are found in the Limbic system. =)
