It depends on the narcotic. Some can still be found in trace amounts several days (even weeks) after you stop taking them. You may no longer be feeling the effects, but there are still traces in your blood and tissue.

It also depends on your metabolism and how well your body processes toxins out of your body.  I have known people who can pass a drug screen within as little as 24 hours when they were younger but now that they are older no such luck.  Your best bet is to not take them at all.  One bad drug screen on your record could mean trouble.
