For the 2010-11 season, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League was at about par with the rest of the Canadian Hockey League with just one fifty goal scorer. Etienne Brodeur of the Lewiston MAINEiacs barely got over the magical line with 53 goals in 68 games. The league leader in points had just 114 and there were only two others over the 100 point plateau.

There was a time when hockey in Quebec wasn’t so defensive minded. Five times in the history of the QMJHL, the now unheard of 100 goal plateau has been equalled or surpassed. Just to clarify, that reads 100 goals, not 100 points. To compare with the other two leagues that make up the CHL, the WHL has had only one 100+ goal scorer and the OHL’s single season record stands at just 87.

Four QMJHL players have accomplished the feat, with one player, Guy Lafleur, surpassing 100 goals twice. The first time was Lafleur during the 1969-70 season and the last was Mario Lemieux in 1983-84. Three of the four players have since entered the Hockey Hall of Fame after stellar careers in the National Hockey League.

As mentioned, Guy Lafleur was the first player in the QMJHL to surpass the 100 goal mark. In 1969-70, with the Quebec Ramparts, Lafleur scored 103 goals in just 56 games. The following season, Lafleur added 27 to that total for 130 with the Remparts. Added to the 130 were 22 more in the playoffs. Amazingly, Guy found the time to spend 135 minutes in the penalty box during the 1970-71 season.

Guy Lafleur was drafted first overall at the 1971 NHL Amateur Draft by the Montreal Canadiens. He brought his scoring touch to the NHL with six consecutive 50+ goal seasons from 1974-75 to 1979-80. For the three seasons from 1975-76 to 1977-78, Lafleur won the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL’s top point-getter. Guy was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1988.

Gary MacGregor hit the 100 goal plateau exactly in 1973-74 with the Cornwall Royals. MacGregor added 74 assists for 174 points that season, his last in the QMJHL. Before and after that magical season, Gary’s single season goal total never passed 43 and his next highest point total came the following year, playing for the World Hockey Association’s Chicago Cougars with 76.

MacGregor was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the second round of the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft, 30th overall. He was also chosen 10th overall by the Cougars in the WHA draft. Considering the competition for a job with Montreal during that era, he chose the WHA route. In all, Gary MacGregor played 251 games in the WHA in seven different locations. In those 251 games, MacGregor would total just 90 goals, ten less than during the 66 games in 1973-74.

American born Pat Lafontaine played just one season in the QMJHL. In 1982-83, Pat scored 104 goals for the Verdun Juniors in 70 games. Pat proved to be an excellent set-up man as well, with 130 assists.

The New York Islanders selected Pat third overall in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft. Lafontaine surpassed the 50 goal plateau on two occasions during his NHL career. His best season was 1992-93 with the Buffalo Sabres when he finished second in league scoring to Mario Lemieux with 148 points. Pat entered the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2003.

The last player to surpass the 100 goal plateau did it in 1983-84. Mario Lemieux set, what has proved to be, an insurmountable record with 133 goals in 70 games with the Laval Voisins. Super Mario added 149 assists for a remarkable 282 points. He added another 29 goals and 52 points as the Voisins won the playoff championships. Lemieux was one of five Laval players to surpass 100 points that season.

Mario, of course, went on to become the second best player to appear in the NHL. A six time Art Ross Trophy winner and a three time Hart Trophy winner as league MVP, Lemieux was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1997.
