Recent research reveals that women are more likely than men to develop lung cancer and those who smoke are two to three times more likely to develop this dreaded disease than those who do not. However, by eating properly you can reduce your risk of developing lung cancer by upwards of 60%.

What to Eat

Consume flavonoids. Flavonoids are water soluble plant pigments that have antioxidant properties that can repair damaged tissue. Foods rich in flavonoids include both black and green tea, onions, basil and garlic.

Eat foods rich in vitamin E rather than take vitamin E supplements – or at least in addition to because the foods give you eight forms of vitamin E all at once and reduce your risk by 50%. Foods rich in vitamin E include sunflower seeds, almonds and peanut butter.

Eat carrots. Carrots contain beta carotene and falcarinol which, according to research, both reduce the risk of developing lung cancer.

Eat an apple away. There are anti-inflammatory properties in vitamin E that reduce the risk of lung cancer and boost resistance to other lung ailments such as pneumonia. Red delicious have the highest concentrations of this cancer fighting vitamin.

Eat oranges, lemons and tangerines. Citrus food is full of anti-oxidants and carotenoids that can actually heal damaged lung tissue before cancer begins to form.

Eat foods rich in isoflavones like soybeans and soy products such as tofu, chickpeas, red clover.

Eat rye grains, linseeds, carrots, tea, spinach, broccoli and other vegetables as they all contain lignans that work to help fight lung cancer.

Eat red grapes. Red grapes contain bioflavonoids which are powerful antioxidants that work as cancer inhibitors. Grapes are also rich source in resveratrol, which suppresses enzymes that can stimulate cancer-cell growth and suppress immune response.

What Not to Eat

Avoid sugary drinks like sodas and sugar added juices. Limit consumption of energy-dense foods that are processed and high in added sugar, or low in fiber, or high in fat.

Avoid processed meats and limit consumption of red meats.

Limit alcoholic beverages

Limit consumption of salty foods and foods processed with salt.

Don’t use supplements to protect against cancer as research suggests that those taking supplements of vitamin E and b-carotene increase ones chances of developing lung cancer.


Get at least 20 to 30 minutes of physical activity per day improves lungs and speeds the healing of tissues. So don’t neglect moving about.
