Horse Gram Weight Loss

Horse gram, or kollu podi, is used for weight loss in ayurvedic medicine. It may help with weight management and does have some good health benefits.

Horse gram is a bean grown in India and also known as Gahat, Muthira, Kulath or Kulthi. In its powder form it is called kollu podi. Horse gram is used in ayurvedic medicine for coughs and breathing problems caused by phlegm, hiccups, flatulence, kidney stones, jaundice, water retention and high fever. Horse gram benefits also include its ability to help eliminate parasites and worms. While there is little scientific evidence to support claims that horse gram helps with weight loss or weight management, many Ayurvidic doctors believe the bean can help lower cholesterol levels and also help those wanting to lose weight.

Horse Gram and Kollu Podi Health Benefits

Horse gram can be eaten in much the same way you would prepare are dahl. You can soak the beans overnight and cook on the stove or in a pressure cooker and serve with rice. The cooking time is slightly longer than other beans. Horse gram can also be added to vegetables, stews or salads. Horse gram also comes in powder form, called kollu podi, which can be added to soups and stews. This powder has been used by body builders to enhance muscle formation, but there is no evidence to suggest that this actually works. However, having said that, horse gram is an excellent source of protein and contains very good levels of the minerals molybdenum and iron. It is also a naturally good source of vitamins and amino acids.

Ayurvedic Weight Loss Remedy

In ayurvedic medicine horse gram, or kollu podi, can be made into a weight loss preparation that can be drunk in the morning and evening. To prepare, mix one tablespoon of kollu podi powder with one tablespoon of ground cumin seed. Boil these two powders in four glasses of water, and drink one glass on an empty stomach every morning and evening. Anyone who is pregnant or breast feeding would be wise to seek professional advice before using kollu podi for weight loss.
