Bok choy is a great source of antioxidants as well.

It has the ability to lower or reduce certain types of cancers such as lung, colon, prostate and endometrial cancers. An organic compound called glucosinolates found in bok choy or in other cruciferous vegetables, plays an important role in preventing cancer. Glucosinolates are converted to isothiocyanates in the body, which are helpful in fighting against cancer. Antioxidant and beta-carotene also play important role to lower the risk of cancer.

It is a good food for the heart as well. Folate, Vitamin B6, antioxidants- all play a crucial role on lowering the risk of heart disease. Potassium helps to prevent high blood pressure levels and controls heart rate. Beta-carotene content in bok choy makes it a good food for preventing cataracts. It is helpful in reducing macular degeneration. Bok choy is a high fiber food and that’s why it’s good for digestive system. It helps to calm irritable bowels and prevents constipation.

Because of the health-promoting compounds, it is a good vegetable to add into the daily diet. It’s good and healthy alternative to cabbage as well.
