Do Herbal Viagra Products Have Any Beneficial Effects

Since its debut in 1998, the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra has been a smashing success around the world. This easy to take magic pill has rejuvenated the sex lives of more than twenty million men around the world and has been the subject of an enormous amount of press, from scientific journals (more than a thousand peer-reviewed articles) to the popular media. The name recognition alone is a stunning success story of modern marketing and the word Viagra is almost universally understood today.

Not surprisingly, after the success of this product, many other companies opted to get a piece of the pie. Today there are a few other drugs on the market that compete with Viagra, but though they work the same way they represent new molecules, new drugs, and are therefore different from Viagra proper. There are also other alternatives that seek to cash in directly on the name Viagra has created for itself, and these include generic Viagra and herbal Viagra. What are these alternatives? Are they legitimate? Do they work?

Generic Viagra or sildenafil citrate is basically the same drug as brand name drug as brand name Viagra and should specifically state that the active ingredient is sildenafil citrate. Like other generic drugs, these are clones of name brand drugs that are produced by other pharmaceutical companies using the exact same active ingredient, though the inactive ingredients may differ. Although U.S. patent laws prevent American companies from producing generic Viagra until 2011, these same restrictions do not apply elsewhere in the world, so many perfectly legitimate pharmaceutical companies are now producing generic Viagra.

Herbal Viagra, on the other hand, is a completely different matter. Generally speaking, the substances found in herbal Viagra are not in any way related to sildenafil citrate or Viagra at all. Instead, these are completely different compounds that are trying to sell themselves as sex drugs and cashing in on Viagras name to do so. Further, since most herbal medicine is considered ineffective by the medical profession they are largely unregulated, so no one can really say what is in any particular batch of herbal Viagra. There have been efforts to stop this completely dishonest misrepresentation of these products, but since the word Viagra has entered the popular language it has been difficult to prevent these companies from falsely associating their herbal products with the legitimate drug.

As a general rule of thumb, generic Viagra is perfectly legitimate in of itself and safe to use. People seeking to buy generic Viagra online should look to ensure that the product they are buying specifically cites sildenafil citrate or sildenafil as its active ingredient, in which case everything should be fine. These legitimate generic drugs tend to come from other developed countries with decent safety standards and regulation like Canada, Israel, or the United Kingdom. As for herbal Viagra, while some variations may work for some individuals, these effects are just as likely to by psychological like taking a placebo as anything actually medical in nature. Generally speaking, herbal Viagra is not Viagra at all and is some other substance completely that is just trying to cash in on Viagras name recognition.
